I like hydrolyzed protein diets for the hypoallergenic diet trial. Hills z/d and Purina HA are my 2 favorites. They make the protein sources so small that the immune system can not recognize it as an allergen. Diet trials should be continued for 12 weeks to know if they are helping. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would recommend that when it comes to diet you focus more on the allergies as this can be helped more with the diet. I highly recommend Royal Canin Ultamino which is great for allergies. Good luck!
Allergies in dogs can be caused by food but also commonly to environmental allergens. So, a lot of dogs need multimodal treatment. A diet trial for food allergy means you either have to feed a hydrolyzed diet (like hills Z/D or purina HA as examples) or a novel diet (with protein and carb sources that are uncommon, like Royal canin venison/potato). A diet trial requires feeding only that diet for 2 months. No other food, treats, etc. You also need to watch for ingredients in meds, like beef in some heartworm prevention, etc. Chicken, beef, and lamb are very common food allergens. Keep in mind lack of response to a food trial either means that food has an allergen or food allergy is not the cause. I agree with you that all other measures should be tried before Apoquel, and if itching is her main issue you can talk to your vet about a Cytopoint injection to help this. Another option is to see a dermatologist. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!
As far as dog food goes, I tend to recommend Hill's Science Diet or the higher end Purina products. If you are looking to go a more natural route you would want to try something like Earthborn or Acana. Periodontal disease can be delayed with regular teeth brushing if Ratchett will allow it. You should be able to purchase most of what I mentioned at one of those stores. Hope this makes sense.
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend Hill's Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina and Iams/Eukanuba. These companies employ veterinary nutritionists and have above industry standards regarding quality ingredients and care to prevent contamination at their facilities. These companies are far superior than the boutique brands. Have a good day!
