All natural wood products leach tannins, which discolor water and reduce pH levels. To minimize this effect, soak wood in a separate container, and change water daily to remove excess tannins. When the water color goes from dark brown to a very light "tea" color (or clear), the wood is ready for your aquarium. Adding extra carbon to your aquarium filter can help to remove any remaining discoloration.

Customers say

Customers overwhelmingly praise the driftwood for its natural aesthetic and ability to transform aquariums into stunning environments. Most find it a beautiful, high-quality addition that enhances tank appearance significantly. However, many note substantial tannin release that turns water brown, requiring extensive soaking or boiling for preparation. Some customers accept or prefer the tint for its pH-lowering benefits, while others find the discoloration frustrating. A few report receiving pieces smaller than expected or inconsistent with product images. Despite these preparation challenges and occasional sizing concerns, most customers consider it worthwhile for the visual impact.

Just got two of these and I am extremely happy! The description says 6inches. One is approximately 10" X 6" and the other is almost 12" x 6"! Yay! Great value. Beautiful shapes and colors in this wood. Do soak/boil it to release most of the tannins and you are set!

Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought Mopani wood a couple of weeks ago and boiled it to remove the Tannin and cause the wood to sink to the bottom of my tank. It was recommended when I purchased several Plecos because they like to eat the wood. I have had no problem with water discoloration and my Plecos are on it daily.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Beautiful Piece Of Wood

I just purchased mine today, it looks beautiful, prior to my purchase, I did my research and decided to soak and boil this piece of wood. The store my associate said I didn’t have to boil it before placing it in the tank. While soaking this piece, the water turned brown, so I decided to boil it. I’m glad I didn’t listen to the associate.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Fungus growth

I bought this about 3 weeks ago. It formed a white slimy substance and upon reading figured out that it's a fungus. It looks really bad and I tried scrubbing and placing it back and the fundus grew again. I bought a lot from Petco and never had any issue. Stay away from this product or they need to give better instructions to avoid the fungal growth. ***Don't ruin your aquarium***

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

Can I get a size estimate on the wood

Hello, I bought 2 pieces of Mopani wood. They didn’t have any strict ion and the item number was written on the wood. I just put it in my fish tank and water is brown.   Can I boiled them after being in the fish tank? What can I do thank you.

    1. The color change in the water is due to the tannins being released from the wood. Mopani is a denser wood, so it generally sinks, but I'd still boil it. You can boil the wood at any time before or after placing it for a couple of instances. Boiling for 5-10 min on a high setting should take out most of the tannins, but these also don't harm the fish btw.

Is mopani wood safe to use for a bearded dragon enclosure the way it is? Thank you

      What are the dimensions?

      1. Each piece is unique but the mediums are generally appropriate for a 15 gallon tank or larger. I have three mediums in a 75g with a lot of room to spare, but an extra large is all that will fit in my 36g without overwhelming the tank, to give you an idea.

How big is the medium size piece of wood? And which size would be best for a 29 gallon aquarium?

Do I need to boil it or any pre cleaning step before putting into a fresh water tank?

        1. boil it for 5 - 10 minutes to clean the wood and prevent the water from getting too brown

Can I put this in my Betta tank? Does it grow a lot of algae?

        1. no but it might get biofilm which doesn't harm ur fish just scrape it off

Would a typical medium piece fit in a 10 gallon tank?

        1. Yes but it may be too big, they are very nice. a 10 gallon with a 12 inch or so piece of wood is ging to look large in thre may want to get the small, its a good size as well.

What is the width of the various sizes?

        1. If you just measured across it would 3 to 4 inches or wider in places, each one is different.

How long does it take MOPANI DRIFTWOOD to stop causing the water to become acidotic

        1. Thank you for your question. If you have had the driftwood in your aquarium for a year, it should no longer be effecting your water chemistry and more than likely something else is causing the pH.
