NexGard (afoxolaner) is given orally once a month, at the minimum dosage of 1.14 mg/lb (2.5 mg/kg). NexGard can be administered with or without food. Care should be taken that the dog consumes the complete dose, and treated animals should be observed for a few minutes to ensure that part of the dose is not lost or refused. If it is suspected that any of the dose has been lost or if vomiting occurs within two hours of administration, redose with another full dose. If a dose is missed, administer NexGard and resume a monthly dosing schedule. Flea Treatment and Prevention: Treatment with NexGard may begin at any time of the year. In areas where fleas are common year-round, monthly treatment with NexGard should continue the entire year without interruption. To minimize the likelihood of flea reinfestation, it is important to treat all animals within a household with an approved flea control product.
Afoxolaner is a member of the isoxazoline class. This class has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions including tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Seizures have been reported in dogs receiving isoxazoline class drugs, even in dogs without a history of seizures. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. The safe use of NexGard (afoxolaner) in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs has not been evaluated.

How fast does this medication start to work
- I think it starts working right away. My dogs have not had any fleas using this product. If your dog has fleas now, I'm not sure. It shouldn't take long though and my dogs haven't had any adverse reactions from this medicine.

There are white tailed dear in south eastern Michigan. It doesn’t say it will prevent ticks from them, does?
- @ Quinn26. A tick can still bite your dog when taking Nexgard. Nexgard kills ticks and fleas when they bite your dog. It works very well for fleas. I do not know about that particular type of tick. I have been told the Seresto collar works really well for preventing tick bites. That is the opinion of a dog owner whom lives a heavily wooded New England area

My Chihuahua mixed had Simparica for over year. Now I want switch to Nexgard, is it ok.
- We have used Simparica in the past for our dogs, both large and small breeds. It didn't seem to work very well so we switched to Nexgard which we have been using for the past year and so far it has worked well for keeping the fleas away and no problem for our pets digestion.

I live in Wisconsin. Which months should I use this. Its very expensive. I only want to use it when I need to
- Hello we live in Wisconsin. I have been told ticks can only survive above 30 degrees. When snow falls and it is cold during these months I do stop using. However- fist sign of spring she’s back on it!

How much nex-gard do you give 158 pound dog? The weight on the box just goes to 121 pounds.
- Thank you for contacting Drs. Foster and Smith with your question concerning NexGard. NexGard is a prescription drug, meaning that your veterinarian would determine the appropriate amount for your dog and write the prescription for that amount. In general, for dogs over 121 pounds, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures NexGard recommends that the appropriate combination of tablets is given. For example, a dog weighing 158 pounds would receive one tablet of the 60-121 pounds (136mg) size and one tablet of the 24.1-60 pounds (68 mg) size. We recommend discussing all medications and dosages with your veterinarian, as well as following your veterinarian’s recommendations. We hope this information is helpful. Thanks again for contacting us. Best regards, Veterinary Services Drs. Foster & Smith

Is this product safe for my 9 year old German Shepherd?
- We have been having a terrible flea problem this year & our 1 dog, which is a 9 year old terrier mix, is very allergic to fleas. Several topicals that we have applied have failed to rid her of fleas for more than two weeks. Both our vet and also our doggie dermitologist have recommended Nexgard and have told us you can apply both & that there is no interaction. I trust that since both tell me it is safe & they are professionals in their field, it is OK, but I would check with your vet first. They had me apply one first and at the 2 week mark apply the other. Nexgard really worked & will now try it alone. I would not use both on the same day.

How many doses are in the package of Nexgard
- Hello! You can either purchase a 3 month or 6 month supply for your dog. You will need to choose the correct box according to your dog's weight. The Dose is one chewable tablet once a month, so you will get either 3 or 6 doses depending on which option you choose to purchase.
