Customers say

Customers overwhelmingly praise this prescription diet for dramatically reducing chronic skin issues, itching, redness, and digestive problems like diarrhea and vomiting in dogs with severe food sensitivities. Many describe it as life-saving after other solutions failed, with dogs showing improved energy and stable health. However, a significant portion express frustration over the recent formula change, reporting their dogs refuse the new version and noting visible differences in color, texture, and ingredients like ground pecan shells. Despite this setback, most customers consider the health benefits essential and worthwhile.

Horrible smell in new formula..

RSA3319

We have purchased ZD for years and it has been great for our dog. The last bag we purchased smells HORRIBLE. It smells rank and fills our room with a sour, foul smell. Our dog will eat it but we can't hardly stand the smell it leaves behind. We will be switching foods, unfortunately. I hate it because our dog did SO well with the old formula. PLEASE bring back the old formula!

Thank you for contacting us, and we apologize for your experience. We are so sorry to hear that your recent batch had a sour odor. A sour or rancid smell could indicate the product may have spoiled, which can occur if it is exposed to heat or moisture during storage or shipping. To be on the safe side, please discard the remaining product. We have shared these details with our Quality Assurance team for further review.

Great for sensitive stomach dogs

MichelleM

Reny has food allergies and often vomits after eating. His vet prescribed this food and he has been doing well on it. He has very few, if any vomiting episodes. His stomach seems to absorb the food because it has ingredients that his system can tolerate. The food looks and smells good compared to other commercial brand dog foods. I would give this a try if your dog suffers from sensitivity issues.

I bought this food less than a week ago and it smells like waste. The pebbles are black and my dog refuses to eat it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

For the past 10 years, I would’ve given Hills z/d 100 stars if I could. My dog has thrived on it. However, the new formulation is terrible. The food smells horrid and must also taste extremely terrible, as my dog who has loved z/d for 10 years now, has refused to eat for months. We’ve tried sprinkling probiotics, adding fresh pumpkin, and adding her favorite treats. Took her for a vet check and cleaned her teeth. She still refuses to eat. So we have started transitioning her to a different brand. There is no other option. So sad that many other pet owners have complained about the reformulation and the same issue with their dogs not eating, but Hills just brushes it off and replies with a link on how to transition your dog to a new food. Terrible. Please highly consider bringing back the old formula. Why reformulate something that was so amazing?

No, I do not recommend this product.

Last week I purchased a bag of ZD. I opened it and it stunk. Saw crushed pecan shells in the ingredients now. My dog has been on it for 7 months and doing ok. Called my vet and advised new formula. Explained it stunk and my dog is not readily wanting it as before. Returning it to my vet and looking into other brands that are comparable. She said many clients are complaining too. Such a shame you messed with a mixture that was great. Shame on you for not letting us know.

This product seems to have almost cleared up my dog Leonard's repetitive hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. He has had two very small episodes of blood in his stool since he started the Z/D and NO vomiting (which is a miracle). am hopeful that these will resolve over time.

Questions

1 - 9 of 9 Questions

How do I change my prescription dog food order from a 25lb bag to a 17.6lb bag?

  1. You can cancel your current autoship order and place a new order with the smaller bag size.

Did they change the size of the 25lb bag? With the change of the picture, the bag seems to contain less food. I can fit it in the bin I have where I couldn't before and I also run out quicker. I have repeat delivery and have had to order much sooner.

  1. It is possible. After our dog being on z/d for two years we had to change her diet as she got pancreatitis. Was it the z/d? Wasn't anything else since that was all she ate.

Has anybody noticed the color of the poop that sacked for a few days if it turns dark brown almost black concerned puppy owner with allergies!!!

  1. No, That has not happened with us and we have 2 dogs age 6 and 8 years old on this dog food.

Did anyone’s dog get worse before getting better?

  1. My girlie (Ozzie) maintained a status quo, no better and no worse on the z/d. Her allergy symptoms manifest as scratching especially her ears repeated frequent ear infections, She chewed on her front paws.  I answered your question so you can get some idea of how many had decreased symptoms or more/increased symptoms.  She has changed to a different brand of food and is seeing a skin and allergy specialist.  She is showing the first signs of improvement I’ve seen.

Does this food have the S/O+ Shield component?

Is this dog food grain free?

    1. Sorry! I originally said yes, but I believe I was incorrect.

I have a 4 months French bulldog and I wanted to know if it’s for puppies too

    1. I'm sorry, I do not know if it is for puppies too. I would ask your vet how they feel about feeding a 4 month old dog the Hills Z/D. My very allergic bubs started eating this brand when he was around a year old. It took a while because I tried different brands and even raw before I tried Hills Z/D. Raw worked well with eliminating his constant itch and red muzzle, but he always had soft stool. Long story short, it seems like my dog is allergic to seafood - and most dog foods have omega-3 from fish oil. In the end, Hills Z/D is amazing for my dog! I believe the soft food version has had recall issues. But the dry dog food hasn't. I hope this is helpful.

My shelters have been eating this food for years.  However, we just bought a new bag and since we started feeding it to my dogs they have been acting differently.  They leave half of the food in their bowls and don’t seem interested in eating it.

    1. This happened with my dog, Geo - when I first opened a 25 lb bag! He was hesitant to eat it, and his bowel movements (timing and texture) changed. After a few days (to ensure it was the food), I ordered another bag (17 lb bag so as to not have to throw away a 25 lb bag), and he is back to normal!

I am doing a food trial using this dog food to rule out food allergies. I noticed there is chicken liver in the food. How is that going to rule out chicken as an allergy? It is the same as chicken in other dog foods correct?

    1. according to my vet, it is hydrolyzed chicken which means all of the allergens have been taken out
