How to tell if my female rabbit is spayed without surgery or signs?

Rabbit bonding is more based on the rabbit and who they like then on female/ male status or neutered or intact status. Some bunnies bond well and some don’t. I think considering a bonding mate for her would be a great idea. Just go slow with introductions and be ready to take bunny #2 back if they don’t like each other. The best way to reduce aggression is to have both of them spayed. Spaying females drastically reduces aggressive behavior, as hormonal aggression is most common in female rabbits. Hormones drive them to compete for territory and to protect their home from invaders. I recommend having them spayed before bringing them together.

There is no way to know if spaying will help to change her behvavior or not. There is no guarantee but it probably will help somewhat. Rabbits are very territorial so once that behavior is ingrained in them it is hard to correct it even with surgery. When they are spayed younger, the surgery has a better chance of working to change unwanted behaviors. It is recommended to spay around 4-6 months. Generally spayed/neutered rabbits tend to be less aggressive as the sex hormones are eliminated. Aggression and dominance do also have some behavioral component so the surgery alone does not necessarily mean that EVERY rabbit that gets it done will gentle down. In general though, they become more tame. I hope this helps!

Hi! It is possible that after Mistie is spayed she will accept the other rabbit. However, just like people, some rabbit personalities just don’t ever get along. So I’d have your rabbits spayed and neutered and do a gradual introduction in neutral areas as you suggested. But realize the pairing might not take and be ready to intervene and separate them if necessary. When rabbits don’t get along, they can be quite aggressive and harm one another. Also, keep in mind that even after a male rabbit is neutered, he can store sperm for up to 28 days! Of course, this won’t be an issue if you have Mistie spayed.

It is recommended for pet rabbits to be spayed because of the very high risk of uterine cancer in this species - around 50% of intact female rabbits are estimated to get uterine cancer, which is a huge number. It's true that wild rabbits don't have surgery to be spayed, but they also have many more health problems and shorter lifespans than pet rabbits :) The cost to spay a rabbit will vary depending on what part of the country you live in and which specific clinic you use, so I would recommend calling around to some local vets who do this surgery to ask about costs.
