My pet's pee is red after taking antibiotics. Is this normal?

Rabbit urine can be naturally more of an orange color than other mammals. This is partly due to their diet and partly their biology. If Olaf's urine is normally more yellowish than this and remains this color when you stop giving him medication and extra fruit (which is high in sugar so generally only given as a special treat), I would discuss this with your veterinarian. One way you can monitor urine color in rabbits who are litter box trained is to switch to white CareFresh litter, which will allow you to see the urine color more clearly than most other litter types. This urine color could be normal, as rabbits can have red/orange urine due to the extretion of plant pigments within the diet. It's also possible it could be caused by a medical illness such as stones/sludge within the urinary tract, cystitis, uterine adencarcinoma, or polyps. Even though it often turns out that the color of the urine is normal due to the excretion of plant pigments, it's still important to have Waffles (love his name!) checked out by a vet to be sure. I would bring him into the vet in the morning for a health check.

It is possible that she has a UTI that is not responding to the particular antibiotics that your veterinarian initially prescribed, which can be a problem especially in older pets. Your veterinarian should perform a urinalysis and a urine culture and susceptibility (if they haven't already) to see if there is an infection present and to what particular antibiotics it is susceptible. Another possible cause of Gracie's signs could be urinary bladder stones, which can cause irritation of the bladder, leading to frequent urinations that are often red-tinged. Most bladder stones are visible on abdominal x-rays, which may be recommended by your veterinarian. Other stones require an abdominal ultrasound to see. An abdominal ultrasound would also be able to detect any other abnormalities in the bladder, for example, a tumor. I recommend ensuring she has plenty of access to water, and having her seen by your veterinarian at their next available appointment. I hope this is helpful!

This can be normal. The color is caused by the excretion of betacyanin that is in the beets, but it should not cause medical problems. The red color of the urine should resolve in 12-24 hours after ingestion of the beetroot, but if it does not, then that isn't normal and something else could be causing the color of Scooby's urine such as a UTI or bladder stones. Hello. What you are seeing are porphyrin pigments in the urine. This is perfectly normal & may come & go. Make sure his pelleted diet is fresh & appropriate for rabbits. Rabbits absolutely need hay & grasses to live well & should be available to Snow all day long. You can feed other green leafy plants such as broccoli, cabbage, chard, parsley, celery leaves, watercress, kale, endive & carrot & beet tops. Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

Normal rabbit urine often reflects their diet and comes in many colors of red-orange-yellow and is not of major concern unless there are obvious blood clots, discomfort when urinating or altered thirst/fever.
