How do I safely separate baby Syrian hamsters to avoid fighting?

Hello there! I suggest getting in touch with a hamster rescue or local animal shelter to surrender the hamsters. You could also post an ad on Petfinder, though do be careful to screen potential adopters. In the meantime, I strongly suggest separating your males from your females in order to prevent new pregnancies. As a very last resort, which you may not have thought to consider, is to donate your hamsters to a wildlife, reptile, or raptor rescue to be used as feeders. I know that sounds terrible, but if you truly cannot provide for them, it is an option that is humane and could save other animals' lives. If you plan on keeping any hamsters, be sure that you keep one/two females or one male so you don't get any more unwanted babies. They look to be 3-4 weeks old. At about 4 weeks old, all hamster babies should be split from the mother into two cages—one for males and one for females. If you keep them all together they will start to breed as they become sexually mature at only 4-6 weeks of age. It is very bad for them to breed each other as they are related.

I recommend handling the young as little as possible to prevent Khaleesi from being aggressive towards you or from taking it out on her pups. While it is less likely at this age, hamsters can even canibalize their young when they are stressed. Hamsters can typically be weaned (start eating dry food, no longer needed milk from the mother) at about 3 weeks. I recommend separating them into different cages or homes to prevent the hamsters from reproducing. You should also separate Khaleesi from the male hamster if you wish to prevent further breeding. Unfortunately yes, it can be very common for hamsters that are housed together to start fighting. This can occur even if the hamsters have always been together. I would recommend keeping them separated for a couple days and then trying to re-introduce them again like you did last night. It depends on the hamesters. Not all hamsters will get along. It is also important that you do not put male and female together unless you want babies or one is spayed/neutered. If you are going to try you need to monitor them closely and I would not leave them together over night. If they are doing well you can leave them together for longer periods of time. Some hamsters will have aggression when put together. Hope that helps

Great question! You can send them to their new homes around four weeks of age. When they reach this age, the male and female pups should be separated and kept in different cages until they go to their new homes. I hope this helps!
