Why is my senior hamster losing weight and hunched over? What to do?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 136 lbs

Hi my local vet in the UK near me saw my hamster hattie last week as she was constantly loosing weight and she was hunched up so I got her in with my vet she checked hattie over and the vet said there's nothing wrong with her she has had her ears down constantly the vet suggested igive her a animal probiotic to hydrate her so I am doing that she still doesn't seem right to me the vet said it could be her intestines in older hamsters as she is 1year 9months is there anything you can suggest

Thanks for reaching out about Hattie. The suggestion would be to have some diagnostic test performed, such as radiographs and blood work. Spondylosis or back problems are common in aging hamster, and could be managed by anti-inflammatory medications. Kidney problems, intestinal infections or parasites can also be investigated. Dental disease can reduce appetite. Uterine neoplasia is not uncommon in female hamsters. So a diagnosis is needed prior to recommending a treatment plan.

Thanks for reaching out about Auggie. With intermittent blood in the urine and a swollen abdomen, uterine enlargement, (probably cancer) is likely. Hamsters are induced ovulators and are constantly in heat, therefore estrogen. High sustained levels of estrogen can lead to uterine neoplasia. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Most likely, she needs to be spayed. If not going forward with that, palliative medications for pain are recommended. Good luck.

Why is my hamster sick, scratching, losing fur, and losing weight?

I am very sorry winter is not feeling well. I would recommend taking her to a vet due to the weight loss and hair changes. Typically hamsters do not carry disease like infect people but I would recommend discussing that with the vet at her visit. I would be concerned about possible dental disease, skin infection, skin parasites or even internal disease. Winter really needs a good exam to determine the cause and provide proper treatment. hope that helps
