Why is my newly adopted rat's toe swollen? Is it bumblefoot or injury?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed

My rats toe has been swollen for as long as I've had her which is about a week, I'm not sure about before that. I adopted her from people that couldn't take care of her anymore. I'm very worried that it's bumble foot but it's only on her toe.

Thanks for reaching out about Calypso and including a photo. Don't believe this is bumble foot as that usually affects weight bearing areas. More likely an inflamed joint (previous dislocation) or an infection. Does it seem painful? Can you flex the toe? Anti-inflammatories or antibiotics could help the situation. If really painful and effecting walking, an amputation of the digit might give the best prognosis.
Good luck.
