My rabbit has a sore with a hole and brown liquid. What should I do?

Hello, and thanks for your question. Ouch, poor Razz! From that photo it looks like Razz has a deep ulcerated wound that is likely infected. Razz should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as she likely needs to be put on antibiotics to treat that wound. I hope this helps and she feels better soon!

Poor Shu! I can see that the growth is relatively large and inflamed. It also appears to have a bit of dead tissue in the center. This is likely to be fairly painful, so Shu should be seen by a vet to receive pain medication and a thorough cleaning of the area which may require mild sedation. There are certain viruses that predispose rabbits to developing masses, and while there is no cure for the virus itself, the mass can be removed to improve quality of life. If you have any other rabbits, I recommend separating them from Shu as the virus can be contagious. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Even though a picture of the wound itself would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). An immediate check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. This is probably an abscess that burst, and it is a good thing that it burst. However you should not bathe your rabbit with this open wound. Since abscesses in rabbits are very nasty and can actually come back in the same place, you should take Peanut to a vet to clip, clean, disinfect/flush the area. Your vet will also check whether your rabbit has more abscesses you may not have noticed. Please take him to your vet before the weekend.

I am so sorry for the delay in answering your question. The best thing you can do for a wound at home is to keep it clean. Clean the cage out completely. Make sure there is soft, clean bedding in the cage at all times, which means you need to replace the bedding material daily while the sore is present. Most pharmacies will have Betadine. Get some water and add a few drops of butadiene so that it looks like tea. Then submerge the affected foot into the liquid. Try to keep it wet for a minute or so if he will tolerate it. Then gently pat it dry with a clean towel. You can take a picture and submit it with a question to the forum, and one of us can try to further advise you. I can see what looks like a small wound on Thumper's skin. It appears rather small and superficial, and does not seem to be bleeding. I recommend keeping it clean and applying a small amount of SSD (silver sulfadiazene) ointment to the area. I'm not sure how Thumper may have gotten the wound, but I would recommend evaluating his environment for sharp edges or any contact with bigger animals. It could be an abscess, i can't tell for sure from the picture though. rabbits do not have the ability to process the pus that tends to stay very hard compared to other animals, for that reason if it is an abscess you will need to take Bella to the vet in order to have it lanced and cleaned under sedation.
