My rabbit has a runny nose with white discharge. Is it Snuffles?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 5.5 lbs

My rabbit has a runny nose (white discharge) but clear eyes and ears. He lives with his mum (I am not a breeder) they are both neutered and have access to hay, grass, pellets and greens every day. He has no history (that we are aware of, they are rescues) of respiratory problems. We are worried though that he could have Snuffles?

Separate him for now just in case it is infectious. Snuffles is extremely contagious.
Have Ollie examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits. A culture of the discharge can be collected and submitted for culture to identify the bacteria responsible for snuffles (Pasteurella spp or Staphylococcus spp). Treatment can be administered as indicated.
