My rabbit is in a dark garage. Should I leave a light on or off?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Should I leave the light on or off for my rabbit? I recently moved my rabbit into my garage, but it’s pitch black with the door closed. Is it better to leave the light on or no? I was thinking about getting a small nightlight for him, but for the time being is on or off better?

Rabbits, like most mammals, need a light/dark photoperiod. The amount of light and dark changes with the seasons In the wild, rabbits are most active at dawn and dusk while spending most of the day safe in a burrow underground.
Some light or light cycle is needed to prevent stress. A low wattage bulb on a timer may provide enough light so that Pierre is not in constant darkness, which is not healthy.
