Is it safe for my pet rabbit to eat seeds as part of their diet?

Bunnies can get lots of leafy greens (kale, lettuce, bok choy, broccoli), and other treats like carrots, apples, banana, oranges, mandarins, grapes . 75% should be hay, 20% should be greens, and 5% should be treats. What a cute bunny! Lola should not really eat peanuts or their shells - peanuts are pretty high in fat and may disturb her intestinal motility. They are not necessarily toxic to rabbits, but not an ideal choice for a treat. There are plenty of other options for treats, many of which are readily available in pet stores. Lola can have things like carrots, green beans, small amounts of fruits such as pineapples and apples, and plenty of hay.

Thanks for reaching out about Fluff and including photos. Peanuts and other seeds are not healthy, too high in fat and low in nutrients. Pellets can be used as a supplement, but free choice to a good quality hay (timothy, not alfalfa) is the primary diet for guinea pigs. Since their teeth (incisors and cheek teeth) grow throughout life, hay is helpful on wearing the teeth down as it requires lots of chewing. It is also low in calories, which is good. The diet can be supplemented with 1/4 c of fresh vegetables. Good luck.

Hi Jaime! There are a lot of fruits and veggies that are safe for rabbits. Leafy greens, like kale, parsley, and cilantro should make up the bulk of their non-pellet, non-hay treats, but fruits in moderation can be great for them, too. Bits of apple, strawberry, pear, papaya, mango, banana, and apricots are good choices. Make sure that they are washed well, and that they don't encompass more than 5-10% of your rabbits' diet. Avoid avocado, all seeds and pits, and wild fruits and veggies. Good luck!

It's correct that fiber is very important for rabbits. This is because they have a digestive system that is made for a high-fiber diet and can get a great deal of nutrients from fiber. For this reason, it's actually best to feed a pelleted diet that is high in fiber like Oxbow. Fruits and vegetables should be considered treats and limited and no more than 10% of their diet. High quality hay (timothy or brome are good choices) should be offered all the time. Grass and dark leafy greens should also be offered regularly. There is a lot of information about how to feed a rabbit out there and it can be difficult to know what's correct and what's not.
