Rabbit needs frequent dental trims. Is anesthesia or extraction best?

The surgery itself (removing the teeth) is not risky, however there is always an anesthetic risk. A vet who does a lot of rabbit surgery is well versed in rabbit anesthesia and will be able to minimise the risk. Your rabbits quality of life will be better than before the surgery as he will not have to go through shortening the front teeth again as before, This was always stress. The surgery will fix the problem forever. The only thing that is different, and you will have to help him with, is to regularly brush him and wipe him down with a moist cloth as without his incisors he cannot groom himself so well any more. But that beats having the stress of having teeth trimmed every 5 weeks.

I would find a Vet comfortable with Harley's kidney disease and is fast with dental extractions. Specialists aren't always the fastest at removing teeth. Sometimes the general practitioner is quicker and what Harley needs is to NOT be under anesthesia for 3 hours. Your Vet may just not feel comfortable with the severity of his teeth, his age and underlying kidney disease. Who and how they monitor anesthesia is also important. For the sake of his kidneys they need to be sure his blood pressure is stable and doesn't drop too low. I think you can have his teeth done, but there is risk due to his age and kidney disease but you don't have much choice at this point. I would find someone with in your budget that feels comfortable and you need to be willing to accept the risks and go for it. I wish you the best!

Without seeing the condition of Sookie's teeth it is not possible to give you my opinion on that. Generally, if you see lots of tartar, and if she has a bad smell coming from her mouth, she will need a cleaning under anesthesia. Dental disease can cause heart disease and kidney disease, as bacteria from the mouth can enter the blood stream through inflamed tissue which then gets transported to the heart and kidneys and causes infection there. Anesthesia is very safe nowadays and, provided your dog is otherwise healthy, there is just a small risk involved.

We sometimes do anesthesia multiple times on animals in just a few days or weeks. That is not abnormal. I can never tell you that she will be fine to have anesthesia again after 5 days. No one can tell you that. As long as they are hydrating her (putting her on IV fluids during the procedure) though, I would not be overly worried. Anesthetics we use are the same as in human medicine (in most cases) and are very safe. If she is eating better and you want to wait a couple weeks that may be an option. You should voice your concerns to your vet and go from there. They may agree with you that since she is eating better maybe she can wait a couple weeks. They may have a reason they want the procedure done so quickly. I don't have enough information to know what they are thinking. Hope this helps. It can be very scary to consider anesthesia in a dog with heart and kidney issues, for sure. But rotten teeth are also a very significant health issue. They become easily infected, and bacteria can get in the blood stream and will stick to areas that aren't functioning normally, like heart valves and kidneys. So by leaving the rotten, loose teeth in the mouth, you are at an increased risk of causing damage to the heart and kidneys. There are many precautions we take when considering anesthesia in these patients, but ultimately we do it to prolong their lives.

As with any medical procedure, complications can occur but when the appropriate precautions and techniques are used complications become much less likely. To make things as safe as possible your veterinarian may do pre-op blood work prior to anesthesia. An IV catheter should be placed and the dental is performed under full anesthesia with an endotracheal tube in place. Dental X-rays are recommended to ensure teeth can be extracted as safely as possible. Post operative pain medications should be used after an extraction. If Benji needs any tooth extractions, it is likely if proper steps are taken everything will go smoothly. And Benji will be much happier when any broken or infected teeth are removed.

This is a good question! Any anesthesia has risks, and there can be increased risk in elderly dogs because their organs aren't functioning as well as they used to function. That said, however, your vet would not put your dog through anesthesia if they thought it was too great a risk. You can request your vet to run a geriatric blood panel to see how his organs are functioning to get a better idea of the risk of anesthesia. If he needs a tooth pulled, having it out will make him feel much better and I do recommend having it done if your vet thinks it's safe to do.
