My rabbit accidentally ate onion peels. Are onions toxic to rabbits?

A one time ingestion of a tiny amount should cause no major harm. You may see some stomach upset or a temporary slight decrease in appetite. More dangerous would be an ingestion of a large amount or multiple ingestions of small amounts over a long period of time.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I think that Bunny will be fine. I'd worry about the salt, onion and garlic content of the season packet. I think her licking some of the seasoning shouldn't be too much of a problem. I do not know of a toxic dose. I would only take her to the vet if she is vomiting, not eating or is lethargic. One leaf will likely not pose a serious risk of toxicity. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea or a change in thirst/urination. If necessary, see your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits. Treatment is largely supportive (fluids, special diet, etc.).

Unfortunately it is not possible to make rabbits regurgitate, so a veterinary visit would consist of a gastric lavage. If she just got into the trash within the past two hours, you can take her into a vet immediately to have vomiting induced to get the onions out of her system to prevent any toxicity from occurring. Otherwise, you can monitor her for now. There likely isn't enough onion in these rings to cause toxic symptoms, but to be safe if you see any lethargy, weakness, ataxia, pale gums, hyper salivation, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody urine, I would have Piper seen by a vet immediately.
