Why are my New Zealand rabbit's ears floppy? Will it affect market value?

This bunny is quite cute but does not look like any lop eared rabbits I have met. Even the shape of the face looks slightly different as many of the lops tend to have a shorter, more blunted nose/rounder face. It is possible the bunny could have a mix of several breeds, so it is possible there could be some lop in there. Regardless, he looks like a cutie and hopefully he will make a good pet for you!

Thanks for reaching out about Bun Bun. Would describe it as flakey skin or loose? Loose lends one to believe the skin is sloughing. Flakey skin could be due to parasites, an infection, skin inflammation (multiple causes). Another concern might be myxomatosis, which is usually transmitted via a mosquito bite.. Either way, a veterinary visit should be scheduled. Good luck.

Ear drooping can be a sign of a simple ear infection or a more serious neurological infection called E. Cuniculi which can result in rabbit death. Even if Steve is not exhibiting any other notable symptoms you might want to get your him checked out by the vet - trust your instinct, if it seems odd.... it probably is. My guess is that there is an ear infection deep down inside the ear canal. Rabbits have a very long ear canal. It may not be visible just by you looking at the ear. Your vet needs to look down in there with an otoscope. Hope this helps.

I am very glad to hear that Monty is still interested in food, as anorexia is usually one of the first signs of illness in a rabbit. Is it possible that he could have injured himself? If he'll let you, feel around on his body to see if he winces or tenses up when you touch him in a particular place. Watch his movement for any limping or dragging of paws or feet. I would also see if he'll let you look into his ears to check for any parasites or goo that might be making him uncomfortable and droopy-eared. If the above seems normal and the behavior continues, it's time to call the vet. This is doubly true if he stops eating or has a decreased appetite. After all the medical possibilities have been ruled out, you can safely talk to your vet about behavior modification. Any major changes in the home (construction, new people) could also potentially make him act more aloof, so keep that in mind as well. Good luck, and I hope Monty goes back to normal soon!

Hi there, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It's hard to tell from the pictures, but this little bun may have some cranial swelling going on. Hydrocaphalus, or swelling of the head, is not entirely uncommon in neonatal rabbits and can be life threatening. I strongly recommend getting this little bunny to a certified wildlife rehabilitator or a veterinarian as soon as possible, especially if she's shaking and is only able to lay on one side. This could be indicative of neurologic issues. In the meantime, keep her warm and quiet, and continue to feed her regularly. Good luck, and I hope that Loppy does well!

No idea without seeing Bunnicula (great name btw!), but this could potentially be an abscess, which is common in rabbits and sometimes contagious to other rabbits. I'd visit your nearest rabbit veterinarian who can take a sample of the swelling to examine under a microscope to give you a diagnosis and come up with a plan

She is pretty small, but those ears are pretty big. I suspect she may be a mini lop. Look at lots of pictures of bunny breeds and see what she most resembles, but the pictures make me think she is a mini lop eared bunny. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
