Is it safe to neuter a male rat, or is he too small for surgery?

You should neuter your male rat but i do not recommend spaying your female rat. the reason for not spaying your rat is the fact that the surgery is much more risky than the surgery done form mammary gland tumors.

Hello! I would recommend having all male pet rats neutered. The surgery for neutering male rats is easier and less invasive than in female rats. Intact male rats will likely fight with other male rats and mate with any females (which leads to a LOT of babies) and neither behavior is ideal for companion pets! I would suggest having Ted neutered then introducing him to a friend a couple of weeks after he has recovered from the procedure. I often urge people to try fostering when they are adding pets. It is, unfortunately, very common for male rats to begin fighting as they get closer to sexual maturity. Your rats are getting to be that age, so that may be contributing to the scuffling that you are seeing. There are a few things that you can try - one is to completely separate them from one another. This can be complicated as you will need to have three separate enclosures. Sometimes there is only one aggressor - if you know that one of the rats is the bully (usually the one that has no injuries), you can also try to separate that one and leave the other two together. Unfortunately, sometimes this can then lead to the other two fighting (so it doesn't always work). Another alternative is to get them castrated. I am not sure what the comfort level of the veterinarians in your area is with rats, but this would remove the hormone component of things. A trained vet doctor performing a cat neuter is very safe. Cats are actually much safer than dogs to neuter. In order to make sure Vanilla doesn't feel the surgery, he will be given anesthesia. Anesthesia always has some level of risk, but again, in the hands of a trained vet doctor, the anesthesia is very safe. I hope that helps and I hope all is well with Vanilla.

It sounds like poor Petie has been through a lot in his young age! Although any anesthetic carries risks, neutering is typically a very safe procedure. It's a surgery that vets do all the time, and it's low risk. There is a very good change he can be neutered without anything happening, but unfortunately I cannot 100% guarantee that everything will be ok (you can never guarantee that with any surgery). There is no special qualification for a rabbit savvy vet, you just need to try and look for a veterinary clinic that treats rabbits, often you can find this service in exotic veterinary practices. male rabbit neutering is very simple and can be done by most vets, spaying of females is a little more complex and i would recommend having it done by a vet who is experienced in rabbit surgery.

Steward is very cute! IT can take a while for these guys to feel comfortable with people. They are usually hiding and running from other animals. I would recommend trying to find a treat that Steward really likes. Than you can hand feed him the treat a few times a day. I would only allow you to give this specific treat. That way he can start associating you with a positive yummy treat. I would recommend getting him neutered. You are correct that anesthesia on Chinchillas can be higher risk than dogs/cats but if you find an experienced vet who does the procedure often you will most likely have a great outcome! hope that helps
