My sick hamster has wet tail, breathing issues, and not eating. Help!

The wet bottom could be due to diarrhoea. These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver), which is a very concerning sign in hamsters. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics are likely to be needed. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do back home, as medications are required as soon as possible. Chewie sounds very sick, and I am so sorry that this is happening. From what you are describing, she needs to see a veterinarian immediately. She can then be evaluated to see if there are any possible treatments for her, and if there are not, they can assist with euthanasia if that is needed or desired by you to ease her suffering. 18 months is an older age for a hamster, so that may be related to why she is getting sick. The material around her nose may be making it hard for her to breathe as well - if she tolerates it, you can clean the material off with a warm, wet cloth, but be careful so that she doesn't panic or struggle when you do it since she is already having a hard time breathing. The veterinarian can also clean this off for you as well. I am so sorry again - it is never easy to have a pet get sick.

I am sorry to hear about Chippy. These are concerning signs and I would recommend getting Chippy into the vet as soon as possible. We would be concerned depending on his age about a respiratory infection or a heart issue. He may be able to be treated with antibiotics or other medication if an infection is the cause. Ensure he is in a draft free room with no air pollutants such as smoke, candles, air fresheners and has very clean cage with minimal dust (carefresh style paper shavings are the best) which can irritate the respiratory tract and get him to the vet right away.

If you notice any increase in respiratory rate, nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing, then this is probably a respiratory infection. Respiratory infections are fairly common in hamsters. If Chestnut is not exhibiting any of these symptoms and is otherwise doing ok, I would just monitor him for now. I can see that your hamster is hunched and her fur is raised. Her labored breathing is cause for concern. It can be caused by infections or masses, and requires veterinary attention right away. The blood you identified can be caused by bloody stool, or even a rectal prolapse, both of which are serious medical conditions.
