Why is my hamster smelling, biting, and acting strange after new cage?

Is my hamster sick? I noticed tonight she started smelling unusually like urine/feces, and I am sure she is not in heat because I am familiar with that smell/behavior. It is her and not the cage. She has also been acting up just as of tonight, she bit me for the first time ever when I tried to pick her up and has been resistant my touch. She seems to be drinking and eating normally with normal energy. Also I recently got her a new cage and I read that it can cause stress which can cause sickness

As long as Sandy is still eating and drinking normally I would not be too concerned. If she stops either of these behaviors then I would recommend taking her to the veterinarian to be evaluated.

I think it is very likely that she is stressed because of her new cage/environment. Continue to try and interact with her as you normally do, offer her her favorite treats and toys to help her feel more comfortable. Also, if you got a new substrate (bedding) to go with the new cage this could explain why you are smelling her urine and feces more strongly.

If Sandy stops eating, becomes lethargic, or starts having diarrhea then I would recommend taking her in to see your vet. Otherwise just keep an eye on her for now as she’s adjusting

This does sound like unusual behavior. The good news is that Sandy is acting normal today. If she is continuing to act normal, exercise and eat and drink, I would just monitor her for the next couple of days. My Siberian hamster bites after new cage. Is he stressed or hurt?

It is possible that Khaleesi has hurt herself in the new enclosure. I would recommend giving her a few days to get settled to the new cage. Sometimes a change can cause stress and will make hamsters more anxious and scared. This will change their behavior. If in a few day Khaleesi does not seem more settled I would recommend taking her to a vet to make sure she does not have an injury. At anytime if she stops eating/drinking I would take her in sooner. I would make sure bubbles has a large enclosures with plenty of toys to play with. Sometimes hamsters can have a lot of built up energy due to limited space. If he is eating,drinking and defecating normally I would not be concerned. However if he continues to have odd behavior or starts acting ill I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam

It sounds like you are doing everything correctly. Separating them is the best idea because once they start fighting it usually will not subside. It sounds like she is doing OK but continue to monitor her for signs of illness/distress. If you notice anything or you become worried then please get her to a local exotics veterinarian for an exam. I think you need to give him more time to calm down. One day is not enough. If he is very stressed it is best to cover the cage for a few days and bother him as minimally as possible. Why is my new hamster biting blankets when I put her on my bed?

It is possible that placing your hamster on your bed is a stressful experience for her which is why she is chewing. If you have other pets that get on the bed their scent could be on the blanket making her feel territorial or stressed out. Placing her on a freshly washed blanket and offering a few favorite treats may help her relax some. If the behavior continues or you see other signs of illness or behavioral changes then I suggest you have her examined by your vet to rule out health issues (like a dental issue). Hope this helps.
