My hamster sleeps in the corner, not its hideout. Is this normal?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 0.25 lbs

Why does my hamster sleep in the corner when I’ve provided her a hide out? I got her a bin cage and the first night she used the hide out then started pushing it out the corner and sleeping right next to it. She also stuffs the hide out with bedding. I try to encourage her to use it but taking the bedding out but she just stuffs it back.

Just let her set up the environment that way she likes it. You can't force her to use the house. Some hamsters just prefer to sleep in an open nest in the corner of their cages rather than choosing to sleep inside a house/hideout. This is pretty normal.

If you want to try a different house you could do that. Some don't like those clear, see-through houses. They prefer something darker.
