Hamster has a small hole in cheek pouch. What to do? Will it heal?

hi my hamster’s left cheek pouch has a small hole there’s no blood or anything what should I do right now? Will it be get well by it self? How do I take care of him right now?

Thanks for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The hole might have been caused by a perforation or an abscess that opened up. The best recommendation would be to see a veterinarian.
If not, try and keep the wound clean with a warm washcloth. Do not apply anything topical such as Neosporin and this will upset the normal bacterial flora of the intestinal tract, if he grooms and ingests some. Monitor to make sure he is eating well and not loosing weight. If kept clean, it could heal up on its own.

Ouch, poor Cheeky! You need to separate him and put him in own cage with his own food, water, and bedding. You also need to take him into a vet immediately. This is quite a large wound and it has to be treated by a vet now. Best of luck.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to an infection for example. It may be that a part of the food got through the skin and it is now infected. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to evaluate this further and decide what would be best in terms of therapy. Unfortunately there are no over the counter medications you can give a hamster. If a vet there in your country will not treat hamsters surely they would do a euthanasia. It is better to relieve his suffering humanely rather than just letting him pass naturally while in pain, in my opinion. That would be the kindest thing you can do for him. If you don't have him euthanized there is really nothing you can do for him other than minimize stress: so don't handle him too much and be sure he has food and water available if he wants to take them in.

My hamster has a lump from its mouth. Is it a protruding cheek pouch?

I can't really see properly as the pictures are very blurry but it is likely to be his cheek pouch that is protruding outside, you will have to take him to the vet ASAP, the pouch will need to either been sutured back inside or removed surgically.

My hamster has a burst abscess. How do I treat it without a vet?

Poor baby! He probably needs some oral antibiotics but since cost is a concern, you can try treating at home. I would gently try to express any pus out of the ruptured area. I would do this the next few days until you are no longer getting any pus out. I would try to clean it with some mild soap and water after you squeeze it. If it is near his ears or eyes, be care to not get it in his ears or eyes. You can try putting some neosporin on the area twice a day as well. If possible, do not let him lick it. You can use a small piece of plastic and make a small cone collar to prevent this if needed. With these guys being so tiny, you will likely have to make your own temporary collar. I have attached a video of how to make one for a sugar glider which are similar in size. I hope this helps and you are able to get it to heal on its own. Just know that if he stops eating or it isn’t improving within a couple of days then it likely won’t heal without some oral antibiotics. My hamster has an inverted cheek pouch. What should I do & cost?

Hello. It is possible to try & reposition the cheek pouch under anesthesia, but unless the conditions that caused it are addressed, it may happen again. Normally, we just recommend amputating the pouch & sewing the edges closed. Cost, unfortunately, is based on who is willing to do the surgery, & general costs in your area. Just start calling around the vets in your area to find who is best to help little Buttercup. But I would not leave it alone as it will become traumatized, eventually necrotic, & this is a sad way to die. Hope you can help her soon. Take care.

My senior hamster's abscess isn't healing. What can I apply?

Thanks for reaching out about Galya. You can clean the abscess are with a warm, moistened cloth or cotton tipped applicator. Topical medications are often ingested and can cause gastrointestinal upset, so not recommended. Try clipping the fur around the open lesion to lessen contamination. Continue with the oral antibiotics if hamster appropriate. Providing heat support in the 75 F range could give some aid, not letting it get too cold. If this veterinarian can't help you, find one who can. Good luck.

My hamster fought another and is badly injured. What should I do?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that another hamster attacked Sugar. I recommend bringing him to your veterinarian to have him examined, have the wounds cleaned, and he can be given medication for pain and antibiotics. Any bite wound has the potential to become grossly infected and abscessed, which is very painful and can require surgery to resolve. In the meantime, you can try gently wiping any discharge away from the wounds with a damp cloth. I hope this is helpful!
