Why is my guinea pig whining and chattering teeth when I touch him?

Hi my guinea pig is having an issue. He seems to be in pain when I pet him. At first, it was just whining but now it’s teeth chattering and backing up. I normally handle him well and he loves laptime. His cage mate doesn’t do this. So their both under a year and I’m concerned my guinea pig has mites. Plz help!

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm very sorry to hear that Marshall is unwell. If he is lethargic, not eating well, cried when you pet him, or is teeth chattering, I would be worried he is in pain. Possible sources of pain include intestinal bloat, dental pain, scurvy, or infection. I would highly recommend getting him seem by a vet within the next 24 hours, preferably one that has experience dealing with guinea pigs. They can help to determine the source of Marshall's pain, and offer supportive medication such as fluid therapy and pain medications, and antibiotics if necessary.

In the meantime, try to minimize stress by not handling him too much, and provide easy access to his food and water. If he is not eating well, try offering more of the fresh veggies that he typically enjoys. Make sure you are feeding both pigs plenty of vitamin C which will help prevent scurvy. Oranges, green peppers and pellets fortified with vitamin C are all good choices.

It does sound as if your guinea pig is painful in this area. I would recommend avoiding touching it and picking him up as much as possible. I would also recommend that you check to make sure he is pooping normally and there is no feces caked around his rectum. If he is eating and drinking and otherwise acting normally, there is probably nothing you need to do. If, however, he stops wanting to eat or becomes lethargic you will have to take him in to be examined by a veterinarian. I hope this helps. My guinea pig is limp, having spasms, and seems to be seizing.

I'm so sorry that Cam is sick. I sincerely apologize that no one has responded to your question and it has been 4 days. I hope he has survived. Some things that could cause those signs are nutritional deficiency (like vitamin C), liver shunt, ear infection, head trauma, and even parasites (like mites). What you are describing almost sounds like seizures. True seizures are rare in guinea pigs although possible. If your guinea pig cries out, falls to one side, and starts twitching, it is most likely infected with a skin parasite known as guinea pig mange (Trixicara cavis). The seizure-like behavior is due to the intense itching sensation caused by the mites burrowing through the skin. The mites are microscopic and you would not be able to see them with your eyes. He needs to be seen by a vet because those mites (if he does have them ) are easy to treat with the proper medication. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

What to do for a baby guinea pig having seizures and chattering teeth?

In a neonatal guinea pig that is having seizures I would be concerned about hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). She is probably not nursing well or not getting enough when she does nurse. I would recommend rubbing a small amount of karo syrup on her gums to help bring her blood sugar level up to an acceptable level. Then, monitor her carefully with her mother. Make sure the mother is allowing her to nurse. If she is not spending enough time nursing or is not able to nurse you may have to bottle feed her. Guinea pigs can drink cows milk or a puppy milk replacer. Guinea pigs can also start eating at about 5 days old so you can try to offer her a pelleted guinea pig food soaked in water and see if she can eat that. If she is eating/nursing well and still having seizures then you should probably take her to your veterinarian to be examined. I hope this helps.
