Can I tell if my guinea pig is sick by its voice? Best bedding?

Coughing could be caused by multiple things but "dusty" bedding (such as wood products) or aromatic woods (cedar, redwood, pine) can cause respiratory irritation or inflammation, and therefore don't make to best bedding, especially if living directly on top. Recycled paper products seem to work the best, as being low dust and highly absorptive. Good luck.

Paper bedding such as Carefresh bedding or this type is currently recommended. There would be no greater issue with them ingesting the paper bedding versus the wood shavings bedding, as the paper bedding would actually be more easily digested (as paper is actually a product made from broken down wood!). The paper is more expensive but has less risk of causing wounds (occasionally the wood shavings can have sharp pieces and cause injury to the skin or eyes or mouth) and less risk of dust or other irritants to the respiratory tract.

I wouldn't say normal. There could be a few conditions happening. I would make sure his teeth are even and there isn't an uneven surface causing discomfort. Oral and respiratory infections can happen which could cause a sore throat which could change the voice. If there are Cedar or Pine shavings for a bedding this can sometimes cause allergies with Guinea Pigs. Also a diet lacking in Vitamin C could be the cause. Always make sure you have the correct husbandry or it's easy for problems to occur. I would recommend keeping a close eye on him and if he is acting abnormal (not eating, drinking, abnormal feces or urinating) then he should visit a local veterinarian. Generally you want to avoid pine and cedar shavings as they tend to have a higher dust concentration. Carefresh or aspen pellets are the best bedding for rodents in general. If possible, try to avoid the pine. You can always lay down a towel to wash daily or paper until you can get to the store and pick up more of your usual bedding. Hello, and thank you for your question. It is possible for bedding to cause itchiness if the pet is allergic to the material, or if the bag of litter carried parasites such as mites. I would suggest using a paper-based bedding such as Care Fresh: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/carefresh-natural-pet-bedding It may also be a good idea to swap out the bag of bedding altogether for a new one, and thoroughly disinfect the cage with soap and water in case of parasites. Of course, the itchiness could also be unrelated to the bedding, so if the itchiness does not improve after making these changes, I would recommend visiting your veterinarian for a further workup. It is not a very good bedding. Pine shavings are much more hygienic and not dangerous for your guinea pig, whereas fleece or blanket bedding can cause intestinal obstruction when eaten by your piggie.
