Concerned about my rescued ferret's tail. Is it an injury or tumor?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I would be a bit worried about this. Hair loss in ferrets can be a sign of many different ailments but the most common is adrenal disease. The one with the rat tail may be seasonal hair loss but I cannot be 100% sure of that just by looking at a photo. In females, hair loss can be hormone related if not spayed. I suggest a vet visit so you can get some answers. If you don't already have a vet you use be sure to use one that is used to treating ferrets. This can be very serious. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam. This is not likely an injured leg (although possible). This sounds more like hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) from an insulin tumor (insulinoma) or an adrenal tumor however, there are some other possibilities too. You can't know what to do for him until you find out why he has these symptoms. Orange spots can be an indicator of adrenal disease in ferrets. This needs to be diagnosed by a veterinarian and treated as well. There are particular tests that are performed to help confirm this suspicion. Typically, surgical removal of the adrenal glands is recommended. You will need to see a vet as it will likely need amputation past the infected part to get to healthy tissue. The skin is growing into the side instead or around the tip and the surgery can correct that and have it healed quickly. It is safe to put regular neosporin on it but do not let her lick it and you can keep it clean with soap and water until you get her seen

A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Monitor for self trauma and scratching, as if opens up, more likely to become infected. Good luck.
