My ferret has a red, swollen anus. Can I wait or use a home remedy?

My ferret seems to have a red and swollen anus, she isnt bothered by it at all I know I should take her in but will she be okay to wait a a day to maybe a couple days? Or can I get some sort of cream that will help?

Anything you apply will likely be licked off, so this is not recommended. You can feed a bland diet and use an e-collar (cone) if she begins to lick her back end until she sees the doctor. If she suffers a prolapse, she should be seen right away. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites.

Anything you apply will likely be lick off, so this is not recommended. You can feed a bland or soft diet to decrease irritation when she defecation. An e-collar (cone) can be used if she begins to lick excessively. If the swelling increases, if she starts straining to defecate or becomes lethargic, then have her examined sooner rather than later.

The creams might help but aren't probably treating the primary concern. Most ferret owners don't think their ferrets eat anything unusual until they have a problem. If you think your ferret is dehydrated, offering water through a syringe might help, if she'll swallow.
Ferrets are meticulous groomers and ingesting hair (a hair ball) is a common occurrence also. Continuing to get food and wear into her is very important, until you can see a veterinarian.
If her condition deteriorates, you need to find a way to get to an animal emergency veterinarian ASAP.

My ferret has a prolapsed anus. Is it an emergency? What to do?

This is usually caused by softer feces/diarrhoea and colitis (inflammation of the last part of the intestine). As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. My ferret had a prolapsed rectum. Does he need a vet visit?

Hi there! Based on Nibbles' age and symptoms, I would recommend a vet visit for sure. Although a prolapsed rectum in much younger ferrets can be caused by infectious diarrhea, older ferrets can have other issues that are worth looking into to make sure overall health is good. Some causes for prolapse rectum aside from diarrhea could be constipation, growths inside the colon, or inflammation of the the organs of the urinary tract like the bladder or prostate. Also, be careful of recurrence and watch Nibbles closely to make sure he doesn't chew on himself if it happens again. In the meantime, if give his veterinarian a call and set up an appointment. My cat's anus is swollen, but not prolapsed. What should I do?

If your pets anal area is swollen and there was diarrhea before this happened, then there are two possible scenarios here 1) Your pet has severe colitis and needs antibiotics (Metronidazole helps with GI issues and inflammation of the gut) prescribed by a veterinarian. They will also recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese or a low fat dog formula like Hill's I/D or over the counter Purina EN Gastrointestinal and potential probiotics (you can try Culturelle it works great). 2) If the swelling is actually to the side of the anus then this could be an impacted anal gland- which also should be treated and express by a veterinarian.

My ferret won't eat after a rectal issue. Should I see a vet?

I would be concerned that your ferret is either constipated, having diarrhea, or perhaps has a foreign body/blockage going on. If she does not eat within a 24 hour period then yes, I would recommend taking her into the vet. Your veterinarian will need to palpate her abdomen, possibly do a fecal exam, and may recommend abdominal x-rays and an ultrasound. My cat's anus is red and swollen but she acts normal. What's wrong?

Poor girl. So it seems that Lela has a moderate amount of colon inflammation and a little bit of the colon is actually prolapsed (pushing outward). She should be seen by your vet immediately to have this area evaluated in person and determine if she needs to have this surgically repaired. I hope that you get some resolve soon for Lela and I am hoping for a full and speedy recovery. It is amazing what cats can go through and not seem to be affected by. They are truly the masters at hiding discomfort and pain. But we have to not use that as a ticket to avoiding proper veterinary care. The vet may even want to prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication to see if they can get this to reduce in size. Best wishes at the vet. Take care.
