My ferret ate string and is throwing up. Is it an obstruction? Vet?

A full obstruction can lead to an intestinal rupture, requiring immediate surgery. The other concern would be continued foreign body in the stomach that could start to pass later. Good luck.

However, if she continues to vomit, this may be due to an obstruction and further therapy may be needed. Hello, so sorry to hear that Luna is vomiting. Vomiting is ferrets is very serious. Even though you don't think she may have gotten into anything, ferrets are very sneaky....... I am most concerned that she could have a foreign body stuck in her intestines which is causing the vomiting. I have removed many ear plugs, door stoppers and hair ties from ferret intestines! The other option is that she could have a hairball. Regardless of the underlying cause, vomiting is not normal. If your vet decides there is no foreign body, then they can at least give her some medication to stop the vomiting, treat her for hairballs (if needed) and get her back to normal. This may be due to conditions such as pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. I suggest other diagnostics are performed at this point such as abdominal ultrasound and labwork. It is crucial to find out exactly what is going on so that therapy can be used based on the specific condition. In the meantime, they may be able to prescribe anti-nausea medications as that may be why she is not eating well. Best of luck!

Thanks for reaching out about Cappy. Young ferrets with clinical signs of possible nausea, are commonly suspect with foreign body ingestion. A veterinary visit is recommended. Besides eating something they were not supposed to, intestinal infections paraistes or metabolic disease, should also be considered. Good luck.

Inappetence and lethargy could be due to a gastrointestinal condition such as gastroenteritis, an infection, cancer, pancreatitis, a gastrointestinal foreign body, among other possibilities. The vomiting could be from residual irritation from the ribbon or there could be more ribbon that is causing an obstruction. It is also possible it is completely unrelated to the ribbon in general: intestinal parasites, hair ball, ate something else gross (plant, etc), pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat/table food. You can continue to watch him but if he continues to vomit or stops eating that is an emergency and he needs to see a vet for an exam and an X-ray to check for a blockage. I wish you the best!
