Why is my new dwarf hamster shivering, not eating, and squinting?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | 1 month and 27 days old

I bought a new Russian dwarf a week ago and is now 9 weeks old. He has been active at night from a round 1am/2am to 3am/4am and I liked to keep him in my room. My bedroom has laminate and I always keep the heating on overnight. However the boiler had an issue and now I don't keep it on overnight. My hamster has since stopped eating/drinking and sits in his bedding with his eyes squinting and shivering. I have moved him to the warmer living room this morning but he has not changed all day. HELP?

Thanks for reaching out about F. Junior. It appears he is ill and might require a visit to the veterinarian. Intestinal parasites or infections, respiratory disease are all common in new acquisitions, and the cold weather could have prompted the condition. Offer water via a syringe but contact your local veterinarian.
Good luck.
