Why is my Chinese hamster aggressive when I try to pick him up?

My Chinese hamster doesn't like being picked up by me. Why?

While hamsters are great pets, and super cute, they can be aggressive by nature because they are a prey species, particularly males. I recommend letting Sammy get used to you by first putting a hand in his cage and letting him come to you. Once you feel he is comfortable with your hand in the cage, you can try gently picking him up, making sure to always support his back end.
