My bunny hasn't pooped in a day and is lethargic. What's next?

Lethargy and inappetance are very concerning signs especially in a bunny because if they don't eat continuously they can develop GI stasis (where their gut shuts down and won't work) which can be life threatening. Milo needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away to get to the bottom of why he is behaving this way.

Loss of appetite and lack of drinking can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Walter evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Another check up and supportive/nutritional treatment is required immediately as these signs may be compatible with a severe gastrointestinal inflammation/ infection. Amoxycillin needs to be used cautiously as it could be contraindicated in rabbits. I would strongly advice to take him to your local veterinarian again today.

Make sure he gets enough fluid , you may have to syringe the water into your rabbit. If you can get "Critical Care" you can mix that with water and feed him this if he stops eating. You can also take some of his pellets (or hay) and grind them into a powder, mix it with water and syringe it to him. This will tide him over until Monday when you see the vet with her. Once the intestine works again he should poop again.

Hi, I am sorry to hear about Percy, a rabbit who is not defecating is a very serious condition which can indicating one of two emergencies gut stasis or gut obstruction. Both are life threatening. Since your rabbit demonstrating the signs mentioned above of: no fecal pellets, loss of appetite and lethargy it considered an emergency please take him/her to your vet immediately as rabbits can deteriorate very fast. It could be the effects of heat that are doing this to Toby. However, I'm slightly concerned he's not eating or passing much faeces, rabbits are prone to a condition called gut stasis where their stomach stops working. It is very dangerous and progresses quickly. To be safe I would have him examined as soon as you can.

It sounds to me like Monty may be experiencing the beginnings of some gastric stasis. This means that his stomach and / or the rest of the GI tract is not moving things along as it normally should. Without treatment, this condition can definitely become very problematic. Rabbits, much like horses, have very sensitive GI tracts that are very susceptible to even the smallest disturbances. It's hard to say precisely why the stasis is occurring, but I think Monty should have a physical exam performed to see if anything obvious can be determined. Options for the vet are going to be between simply treating the symptoms to see if things resolve on their own, or performing some diagnostic testing including imaging and blood work. Medications that would be useful in these instances include anti inflammatories / pain medication (as stasis tends to be very uncomfortable) and potentially drugs that help the GI tract continue to contract.
