My turtle sleeps a lot and won't open eyes. Is it hibernating or sick?

Check the water temperature and ambient temperature. Low temps can affect appetite and activity in reptiles. Keep the water between 24 C and 30 C. A basking spot out of the water should be 29 C to 31 C. UVB lighting should also be provided. Maintain water quality to prevent infections and feed an appropriate diet with vitamin and mineral supplementation. A vitamin A deficiency can cause swelling of the eyes. Repti-Turtle Eye Drops (by Zoo Med) can be used to help the eyes. Find it online or in the local pet store. He may have been hibernating/brumating. Continue with the daily soaks in warm water or a 50/50 solution of water and unflavored PediaLyte. Get him eating if he isn't already. If the behavior persists, have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles to diagnose illness.

As long as the house is between 68 F and 80 F, Mikey should be fine. As a reptile, he does need a basking area to warm up and UVB lighting. Nighttime temps can drop to 60-65 F. Soak him in a warm 50/50 solution of water and an unflavored electrolyte replacement beverage for 30 minutes. This will warm him up and provide hydration. If he is kept indoors year round at constant temperature s, he does not "need" to hibernate.

Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine if it is dead or alive. Low temps may cause extreme lethargy in reptiles. Try warming it up slowly, using warm water and a heat lamp, to see if it starts to move. If it was submerged, it may have drowned. To be sure, you can take it to the local veterinary clinic to confirm death.

Live preys such as worms or small fish, could stimulate appetite by movement. Hibernation is controlled by environmental parameters (cold, decreasing photoperiod). They do breath while sleeping, just very slowly and you should see the rear legs move during inspiration. If concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess. Good luck.
