Why is my turtle's bottom shell red? Is it a sign of infection?

Hello, so my Res Turtles shells look a little red on the bottom. Is that something I should be worried about ? Everything else seems to be fine.

Is this a color change or had it always been this way? Reddish color change can be an early sign of infection. Please make sure the environment is clean, the water temperature and quality is good, and that the ambient temperature is high enough. If the turtle is showing any other concerns such as decreased appetite or energy then my concern level increases as well. A visit to a veterinarian who cares for turtles is never a wrong decision if you are concerned. I hope this helps!

Discoloration of the shells could be suggestive of an infection or shell rot. I would recommend contacting a veterinarian so that they can be seen and to determine what is causing the infection. In some cases environmental adjustment is all that's needed.

This may be an indication of infection or injury. Ideally, they should be physically examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles to diagnose and treat any underlying condition.
In the meantime, maintain pristine water quality via filtration and regular partial water changes. Remove any sharp rocks or furniture that could scrape the shell which would predispose them to infection.
If there is a significant size difference between the two, consider housing them separately until the smaller one gets bigger.

Thanks for reaching out about Shelby and including a photo. Even though the shell appears pinkish, it also appears symmetrical, which is not necessarily an indication of sepsis. If the lesions progress or Shelby becomes lethargic, a veterinary visit and probably antibiotics are recommended. Check water quality parameters, as dirty water can lead to immune suppression and secondary infections. Investigate diet and correct any deficiencies. Good luck.

Looks can be deceiving, but the shell looks fine in the picture provided. "Heathy" is more than just a clean shell though. He should be eating and defecating normally, basking regularly and swimming. There should be no redness or pitting on the shell. Provide clean water at proper temp, a basking spot also at proper temp, UVB lighting and an appropriate diet. Why does my turtle have a white spot? Injury, fungus, or other causes?

The discoloration on the marginal scutes may be due to dietary or environmental deficiencies. It may also be caused by bacterial infection or trauma. The pink coloration in the seams is normal. In other species, it would indicate possible infection. Confirm adequate UVB lighting as well as clean water and heat. A lack of any one of these can cause stress which will lead to infection. Monitor the areas for any rapid change or growth. A physical exam with your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles would be needed for a definitive diagnose after which the appropriate treatment can be administered.

My turtle has a red spot on its shell. Is it shell rot or an injury?

It appears as if Franklin is missing a pectoral scute. This can be due to trauma, infection or a combination of the two. A turtle can develop infection from something as "minor" as a scratch on the shell. Have Franklin examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. He may need treatment and systemic antibiotics. In the meantime, maintain pristine water quality which will aid in healing and limit secondary infection and other complications. Consider increasing ambient temps by a few degrees to aid in recovery. Franklin may ultimately need to be dry docked (kept out of water) for most of the day until he heals.
