Is gooey, melted marshmallow urate normal for my Russian tortoise?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I have a Russian tortoise and today I noticed a gooey, white substance in his cage. It has the consistency of a melted marshmallow. I know they produce urates, I've just never seen them gooey before. I was wondering if this was normal.

It may have been urates as they can vary in consistency and color based on the diet. Monitor Tiny Tim for lethargy, decreased appetite or any change in droppings. If it persists or worsens, you should have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles.
