How to treat my Mississippi map turtle's shell sores and wounds?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Reptile | Aquatic Turtle | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old

I have a one year old Mississippi map turtle and I have been keeping watch on him. I have noticed his shell is creating sores that have now become wounds. I have been using a diluted iodine to help however it doesn't seem very affective. What other things can I do to help stop this from occurring? It's very concerning for me and I wish the best treatment for him. Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your photo and for your concern about Sheldon. I do see the wound but, to me, it actually looks pretty good/stable. Did it look worse before or has it always looked like this? How long has it been there? Is this the only wound? How are you using the iodine (applying it topically or soaking him in it) and how long have you been doing it? What exact product are you using? Have you tried dry docking him? If you could post again with more information we may be able to help you better.

You can always opt for a private consultation where we can chat back and forth. That way you can ask as many questions as you'd like. Best wishes.
