How to properly bathe a tortoise to clean its shell and prevent rot?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Do I need to give my horsefield tortoise a bath? I had shell rot problems with him before and I don't know what to do when his shell is dirty. Do i just wipe it with a wet towel or a bath is needed? If so, how do I give him a bath. Water Temperature, water level, etc.

Thanks for reaching out about Coopy. It is fine to give him a bath when he is dirty, probably lukewarm, around 80 degrees in water up to his mid neck. The bath shouldn't last more than 5-10 minutes. Wipe off or scrub (with old gentle toothbrush) to clean away dirt. Then towel dry, provide heat support for additional drying.
Good luck.
