What are these red bleeding spots on my ball python after shedding?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I have a ball python and he recently got these red soft spots along his side where it looks like blood has come to the surface. He seemed to be getting better after i took his bedding out and replaced it with paper towels but after he shed it got worse and i can see where he bled some. I have no clue what it could be or how to help him get better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Possibilities include infection, parasites, burns or trauma (from a fall or bedding). Changing out the bedding was a smart move. Take it a step further and remove all cage furniture in case Erebus is climbing then falling. Confirm proper temperature and if you have a heat rock, remove it immediately.
An exam with your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles would be recommended to diagnose illness or injury.
