My betta is losing color and has shiny silver spots. What's wrong?

Begin by submitting a water sample for quality testing. Most pet stores will do this for free or a nominal fee. Clinical examination should always include a water quality check, even if you have done so already. Water testing should be performed with a quality test kit, measuring NH4, NO2 and NO3. High ammonia levels, PH imbalances may be responsible for these signs. Oxygen concentration and quality of the filters should be determined as well. If water quality is good and there are no major imbalances, your fish should get examined to look for any sign of bacterial/fungal/parasitic infection and eventually water should be treated. Hi Emma. Pucker looks fine. There is a little difference in the before and after images. This could be due to diet or water quality/chemistry. Continue to monitor him and feed the color enhancing pellets. Maintain pristine water quality via filtration and regular partial water changes. Symptoms that may indicate a problem include lethargy, loss of appetite, clamped fins or difficulty swimming.

Poor water quality can lead to dermal changes/irritations that can results in tattered scales or fins, and other dermal lesions. If the lesions progress, a veterinary visit is needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Any of the over-the-counter medications to add to the water, rarely improve conditions but will more likely be a detriment to water conditions. Good luck.

Cold water can affect activity in fish. Bettas are tropical fish and do best between 78 F and 80 F. Check the water chemistry also. You can use a home test kit, such as the API Master Kit, or submit a water sample for testing. The local Petco may do this for free or for a small fee. Aim for an absence (0 ppm) of ammonia and nitrites with nitrates at 20ppm or less. Perform a partial water change if necessary to stabilize chemistry and/or to improve water quality. Use only conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. Diet can influence color, so it is possible this is partly to blame for the color change. There are diets that can be fed to enhance colors.

Do you test water quality of pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates? Review diet as many of the nutrients in fish foods degrade in months, so fresh food ins required every 2-3 months. Low temps can affect digestion in fish causing constipation. Maintain water at 80F and fast for 3 days. Resume feed tiny bits of cooked and shelled green peas. Feed peas until defecation and swimming are normal. Feed a quality pelleted diet and fast him one day a week to promote regularity.

Melanin, which is responsible for the black, is part of the immune system in fish. The melanin is mobilized from deep in the skin, to the surface in response to a problem. As a young fish, probably newly acquired, it is worrisome regarding an external parasite. A veterinary visit should be scheduled to perform a skin scrape to identify the parasite, as different parasites require different treatments. Good luck.
