Betta fish tank has tiny white worms. How do I get rid of them?

Thanks for your question about your betta. From what you are describing, it is likely that your fish has a parasite, however the color would not be typical. Usually parasites, such as anchor worms, that are common on the outside of fish are whitish in color and not pink. There are a few options - you could post a photo and this may help to determine what it is. You could also take your betta to a veterinarian for evaluation. They would be able to determine based on examination if this is a parasite or not. With the pink color, this could be something more serious, such as a disruption in the body of your fish with something coming out of the hole in the body. White formations on Bettas and other fish are typically an indicator of the condition Ich. You should be able to purchase medication that is placed within the water that may help with this condition. It doesn't have the appearance of ich. He would have white spots, like grains of salt all over him. I don't see fungal growth either in the images. He does have some fin rot though. Check the water chemistry. Use a home test kit or submit a water sample for testing. Most pet stores will do this for free or for a small fee. When doing water changes, try vacuuming the gravel/bottom, as this is likely where the eggs are hatching. Try controlling in this manner prior to adding chemicals/drugs. Adding some snails or fish that will feed on the worms might also aid in control. Good luck.

The best method to keep detritus worms in check is to perform regular tank maintenance. this includes regular partial water changes, vacuuming the substrate regularly, removing dead plant matter and not overfeeding. Detritus worms are a normal part of the tank ecosystem and play a large role as the "clean up crew". They will not harm fish. You can treat an overpopulation with praziquantel. Find it in the aquarium section of the local pet store. Follow label directions carefully and monitor for an ammonia spike from decaying worms. You will likely need to clean the tank (as described above) after treatment to stabilize chemistry and/or to improve water quality. Using this treatment does not mean you can skip out on regular tank maintenance.
