Betta fish eating flakes: Is food coming from gills normal?

Hello, my name is Taylor. I'm not sure if this platform counts with concerns about fish but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to ask. I have a butterfly male Betta and I feed him betta flakes occasionally, but when he eats them bits and pieces come out of his gills. He doesn't seem to be showing any signs that this is hurting/bothering him but should I be concerned or is this normal? I would provide pictures but it happens so fast that it is hard to capture. Thank you for your time.

Taylor, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We can certainly answer your question. I have good news for you. This is normal and no cause for concern. It is similar having crumbs go all over when you eat chips or a crispy cookie. You can try feeding less flakes or switching to a pelleted diet.

Hello, and thanks for your question. You are right that it’s important not to over feed goldfish, but a single feeding of an extra pinch of flakes shouldn’t be too concerning. If there are still flakes floating around in the tank, see if you can scoop them out with a fish net. Otherwise, I would skip their next feeding and restart with their smaller meal the next time they’re due to be fed. Hope this helps!

If you are feeding flakes, the fish may be swallowing air while feeding. This may account for the signs you are seeing. After a period of time, the fish may expel the air and right themselves. Try feeding a pelleted or stick diet that sinks to prevent gulping air at mealtimes.

While she is a baby, you can feed her twice a day. Only feed as much as she can eat in a minute or two. If you feed too much the feed will fall to the ground and then contaminate the water.Later, when she is grown up you can change to feeding her once a day. My Betta fish spits out food. Should I feed it bloodworms and garlic?

Thanks for reaching out about Betty. First, try the blood worms prior to soaking in garlic solution, to monitor ingestion. Garlic can be used to treat some parasitic infestations, and not sure if this is a parasitic problem. Calcium deficiencies can lead to oral boney problems, resulting in inability to swallow food. Iodine deficiencies can lead to thyroid enlargement, also making swallowing difficult. Try the different food first. If swallowing difficulty is monitored, a veterinary visit is recommended for a diagnosis and treatment. Good luck.

Bettas use bubbles to make nests, even without a mate. Try feeding just a tiny bit or even skipping a day, as long as he is active, swimming, fins are not clamped. Overfeeding may contribute to his not going after the food when you put it in.
