What are the best and safest bottom feeders for a betta fish tank?

It is very difficult to see the markings of these fish from the pictures. Many fish may be able to live with a Betta if there is a large enough tank. Here are some guidelines on how to pick tabkmates for a Betta. No nibblers – if a fish nibbles at a Betta fish they will get bit back! Bigger fish and colorful fish could be seen to be intimidating – you don’t want to intimidate a fighting fish! Most of the compatible fish are schooling fish that do best in groups of 4-8. This would include Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras or White Cloud Minnows. That many fish may be too much for a 3 gallon tank. Other non-fish option include Ghost Shrimp, Zebra Snails or African Dwarf Frogs.

Bettas do best in water temperature between 78 F and 80 F. An algae eater should be okay, but it depends on your individual Betta. Some don't mind bottom dwelling tank mates. Watch for signature of aggression and remove the algae eater if necessary.

Bottom feeders such as plecos or corydoras catfish will do well in a tank of angelfish. Other community fish include silver dollars and the larger Tetra species. Monitor for fin nipping and remove fish if necessary. You have a lovely tank and the angels look very nice in it. Be cautious when adding fish as you may overload your tank. The angels will grow as will any additions and your tank may not be able to support the population. This could lead to poor water quality, aggression and sick fish.

Betta are definitively very territorial and you may notice multiple fights for space at the beginning. Definitively the aquarium must have multiple spots for hiding like Terra Cotta Flowerpots and PVC Piping, moss or bushy plants, ornaments, rocks and driftwoods. This will avoid open fights and will provide good places to have some rest.

If there is a strong current, it would not be recommended for a Betta. There is also the water temperature differences for these species to consider. Corys are cooler water fish, doing best in water in the lower 70s F. Bettas do best in warmer water, between 78 F and 80 F. Platys are hardy and adaptable and do well in all but the coolest tanks.
