How do I safely add aquarium salt to my betta tank for fin rot?

I just purchased imagitarium aquarium salt for my betta. I have never used aquarium salt before and It says on the label that I can combine it with sprinkling in a little bit of food once a day. Does this mean it is safe to add the salt in with my fish in the tank? What process should I take so he doesn't become overwhelmed? Also does this help prevent/get rid of fin rot? Thank you!

Aquarium salt can be used as a general tonic to reduce stress, improve gill function, treat minor infection and aid in any recovery. Dissolve up to 1 teaspoon per gallon of water in a cup of tank water and gently pour it into the tank. You don't want to use it for more than 14 days in a row. You will need to perform partial water changes to decrease salinity. Use only aged or conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. Pristine water quality is critical in treating or preventing fin rot and other infections.

A 1 gallon tank is fine for a temporary tank as long as you maintain water quality with regular water changes. You may need to perform a 30% water change every 2-3 days.
One packet of Tail and Body Cure treats 10 gallons of water. You'll need to measure out one-tenth (1/10) of the packet to treat a 1 gallon tank.
Make sure the water is at proper temperature. Bettas do best between 78 F and 80 F. Low temps can cause stress which can delay healing.

Maintaining pristine water quality is the best way to manage most illnesses in fish. The addition of plain aquarium salt (NOT table salt). Can also be quite beneficial. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water in a cup of tank water and gently pour it into the tank. Treat for 10-14 days then reassess fin condition.
Velvet is effectively treated using malachite green. You can find it in the aquarium section of the local pet or fish store. Follow label directions carefully and remove the carbon filter insert during treatment if indicated. It can be used concurrently with aquarium salt. Limit light to 6-8 :ours daily during treatment and increase water temp between 82F and 86F. This will aid in treatment and recovery.

It may be easier (and more economical) to use a one or two gallon vessel to use as a "hospital tank". Use the water from the main tank initially and change the water in the smaller tank every couple days. For the small amount of water, you can use a water conditioner such as Prime (by SeaChem). Find it in your local Petco. A bit of StressCoat will also aid in recovery. Maintain pristine water quality and proper temp (78F to 80F) to aid in healing. Make sure he continues to eat normally as well.

How often should I change water for my betta's salt treatment?

The frequency of water changes depends on how many fish you have in the tank with your betta, how large the tank is (i.e. how many gallons it is), how often you are feeding (more frequent feedings often results in more wasted food and more poop, so it can dirty the tank more quickly), and if you have any live plants present. The amount of salt that is needed also depends on whether you are adding salt just for maintenance or if you are treating your fish for stress or disease. My advice would be to get all of this information and contact your local pet store or aquarium store as they can then help to guide you on these specifics. Alternatively, you can gather all of this information and I can also do a consultation with you as well, whichever is easiest/most convenient for you.

My Discus fish has fin rot and black spots. How do I treat it?

Fin rot is commonly caused by poor water quality. Submit a water sample for quality testing. Most pet stores will do this for free or a nominal fee. Clinical examination should always include a water quality check, even if you have done so already. Water testing should be performed with a quality test kit, measuring NH4, NO2 and NO3. High ammonia levels, PH imbalances may be responsible for these signs. Oxygen concentration and quality of the filters should be determined as well. If she/he is in a tank larger than 2 gallons move her/him to a smaller tank if possible to make treatment easier. The best treatments for mild fin rot are frequent water changes and aquarium salt. Maintain the water the treatment tank between 76-78'F. Turn the light and filter off for the time being. Aquarium salt can be used at 1 teaspoon per gallon. Dissolve it in tank water before adding it. Perform daily 100% water changes, making a fresh salt solution each day. Treat for a maximum of 10 days.

Adding non-iodized salt (aquarium salt) at 1 tablespoon per 10 gallons can reduce osmotic stress but is probably not a treatment for fin rot. My betta has white spots, not responding to ich meds. Is it fungus?

It doesn't have the appearance of ich. He would have white spots, like grains of salt all over him. I don't see fungal growth either in the images. He does have some fin rot though. Dissolve no more than 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water in a cup of tank water and gently pour it into the tan. Treat with salt for 10-14 days then reassess his condition. Partial water changes can be done to reduce salinity. Use only aged or conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. You may need to treat the fin rot for longer but don't use salt for more than 2 weeks in a row without a break. Also, if possible, decrease filter flow to reduce the current. Bettas prefer slow moving water. To provide an immune system boost, you can soak pellets in some garlic juice .
