Is Young at Heart safe for my chihuahua with CHF on Vetmedin?

One of the things you may be able to do to help Pearl lose weight is to home cook for her. There is a website called balanceit.com that can help ensure the home cooked diet you are feeding is appropriate for weight loss and well balanced. From a holistic standpoint improving nutrition and having Pearl lose weight can help her overall well being. If she is on temaril P I assume this is for coughing related to reduce airway inflammation or tracheal inflammation. If she is coughing related to heart disease other medications may be useful so it may be a good idea to schedule a follow up with your veterinarian or even a veterinary cardiologist. There are other supplements and herbal medicine that can be helpful when heart disease is present but they vary from case to case. For now there is very little you can do except start the medication prescribed and wait for them to work. Your dog should start feeling a lot better within the next few days with less fluid in his lungs and better cardiac function. Such diets typically have restricted sodium levels to limit fluid retention, added taurine and L-carnitine, and amino acids that may help support heart function, added B-vitamins and magnesium. Unfortunately the dilation of the heart cannot be reversed, but the medications will help to slow its progression and improve the other side effects of enlarged heart. The vetmedin helps the heart pump faster and harder, the furosemide reduces fluid build up in the lungs and the benazepril stops maladaptive pathways being activated. You should see a difference in him within a week or two, the medication can help to improve quality of life greatly.

Electrolyte abnormalities are a known side affect of heart medications. It's important to make sure she's eating a good-quality balanced dog food so that's she taking in the proper electrolytes. It is also wise to periodically check her blood work to test the electrolyte levels and see where she is. If there are some that are either high or low, your veterinarian may recommend supplementation. There are also heart diets on the market that may be beneficial to her. However, that being said, most commercial dog food diets have sufficient amounts of both and most dogs do not need supplementation. If your veterinarian thinks this will help, I would look at ordering the following product, which can be found online quite easily. Liver support medications such as Hepagen C as well as a low protein, low fat diet such as Purina NF, Hills L/D diet, or Royal Canin Hepatic Support diet can help as well. These diets are formulated especially for dogs that have liver problems such as liver shunts, and they make it easier for the liver to metabolize nutrients that are provided to the body. Pako will have a decreased live span without surgical treatment of this disease. He may live a few years without many problems, but the disease can become refractory, and the neurological signs may worsen over time. I hope this helps! Vetmedin (Pimobendan) is an inotrope, which means that its job is to make the heart pump more forcibly, so I would say that what you are seeing clinically is the medication doing its job. I would not recommend discontinuing this medication. But also, if you feel that your pet Ruby has any other adverse effects to this medication, then it will be necessary to have her seen and examined by a vet in person in order to get any recommendations as to what, if any, changes in her medication are needed in the future.
