Why is my Yorkie yelping when jumping or touched on his back?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

My 3 year old yorkie has been fake out attempting to jump on the couch several times before actually jumping up and yelped loudly several times when finally attempting to jump up. We felt all around and can't seem to find where his pain is coming from except for possibly a back foot. This has been happening for a few months and tonight he cried much longer than normal. sometimes also petting his back or side will make him do the same yelp.

Chronic pain in a three year old Yorkie should definitely be investigated more closely by your primary care vet. Back issues are quite common in small breed dogs, usually related to disk disease in the spinal column. This can be verified with an x-ray. Your vet will also be able to perform a thorough orthopedic exam to try and see if the pain is arising from elsewhere. Pain and be treated with various medications, including anti-inflammatories, opioids, and muscle relaxants. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for dogs in these cases is rest them. This means no more jumping, no more running, and no more rough housing for a couple of weeks to allow for any healing that might be needed. I realize this might be frustrating for both Lou and you, but it potentially might be for the best. Let me know if I was helpful and if there is anything else I can do for you.

This sounds like he could have a bulging disc, causing back pain. Intervertebral disc discease causes pain and reluctance to move. It is fairly common in Yorkies. Yorkies also are prone to luxating patellas but usually they are intermittently lame. I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. They will feel him to localize the area of discomfort and prescribe medication for the pain. This can become severe and some dogs can become paralyzed so keep him quiet until you can get him examined. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Bonut.

Symptoms can include a reluctance to move, jump or do stairs. Many walk with a hunched posture and will yelp when being picked up. My dog yelps when jumping or playing. Could it be back pain?

Poor Cooper! From your description, my main concern is that Cooper may be experiencing some mild neck and/or back pain that flares up intermittently. At this point, I do recommend taking Cooper back to his vet for a repeat exam. Some dogs can be extremely stoic, even while experiencing pain, as a defense mechanism. Your vet will be able to thoroughly evaluate Cooper's back and neck to determine if he is showing any sign of discomfort and prescribe pain medication if necessary. Until you can take him to the vet, confine Cooper to a large crate or small room to prevent him from running, jumping or playing, as this can exacerbate any back injury or pain. Why is my dog yelping when touched and panting heavily?

Poor Baby! It definitely sounds like she's painful somewhere. In my experience, the most common cause of yelping or yipping when touched or petted is back pain, often due to a herniated disc - this is a fairly common problem in dogs. She could also be painful due to some other injury to her legs or back. I would recommend having her examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do a thorough exam to help localize the source of the pain, and may also do x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem.

My Yorkie hurt his leg jumping. What should I do if he's limping?

Poor Max! Max could have a soft tissue injury such as a sprain or muscle strain, or it's also possible he could have fractured something. Max should be seen by a vet to determine the source of the injury. For now, keep Max as quiet and calm as possible. Don't let him jump on/off furniture, and keep his walking to a minimum. If he's not using that leg normally within the next day or two, he needs to be seen by the vet. Do *NOT* give him anything for pain. There are no human pain meds that are safe and effective for dogs, and anything you give him could conflict with a more effective medication that the vet prescribes. My Yorkie fell. Why is his back leg hurting and he's yelping?

Poor Hank! It sounds like he really hurt himself when he fell down the stairs, and he could have torn a ligament. It sounds like he has been in a pain for a long time if this limping has been ongoing for two months, and he really needs to see a vet. Two months is a lot of time for a dog to be in pain, and the cause of the pain needs to be diagnosed so it can be treated. I would even consider taking him into a vet today because he sounds so painful. If you can't find an open vet, take him into one first thing in the morning. Best of luck!

Why does my Yorkie puppy cry in pain when I stretch his back legs?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Pain on extension of the hind legs can be indicative of hip pain, knee pain, spinal pain, or even a soft tissue injury in that area. I would recommend having Coco evaluated by a veterinarian so he/she can perform a complete physical, orthopedic and neurologic exam to better localize his pain. Based on what is found, he/she may then be able to prescribe an anti-inflammatory pain medication to help Coco feel better. I hope this is helpful!
