Can a vegetarian dog food meet my allergic dog's needs?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 85 lbs

Ive had my baby for almost 5 years. Since she was 1 she has been having allergies and we are still pin pointing to what. But my suspicion is shes allergic to some forms of protein. To test that theory I wanted to put her on a vegetarian diet i found one my Natural Balance - Vegetarian Blend. My question is, will she still get all the nutrients she needs? Until I find exactly what it is. I know Salmon oil makes her break out in hives.

As long as the Natural Balance Vegetarian contains an AAFCO statement on the bag it should be balanced for Halo. Although because dogs should really eat some form of meat I'd recommend trying one of the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient diets instead. Choose a protein Halo has never had before like venison or rabbit and feed that strictly for at least 8 weeks to know if it is working.

If the Natural Balance diet does not help you may want to talk to your veterinarian about a prescription hypoallergenic diet like Royal Canin Hydrolyzed protein or limited ingredient.
