My unspayed Maltese is lethargic, bloated after heat. What's wrong?

I would have Hennessey seen by a vet immediately. I would be very concerned that this heavy bleeding, lethargy, and bloating is caused by a pyometra. A pyometra is a serous infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Using a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays, the vet can diagnose if she does have a pyometra and can treat her for it. Should she have one, spaying her is part of the recommended treatment. Please take Hennessey into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see her now.

I am not as worried about the swollen mammary glands as this can be normal post heat, but I am very worried about th decreased appetite and shivering. Pyometra is a life threatening uterine infection that occurs several weeks after heat cycle. Dogs often have non-specific signs of illness such as lethargy, fever, decreased appetite, sometimes increased water consumption, and occasionally vaginal discharge. I would highly encourage you have her examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. I would not wait until Tuesday. X-rays and blood work are usually needed to make a diagnosis. Sometimes early pyometra will need an ultrasound to find it. If she does happen to have a pyometra she will need an emergency spay. Best of luck and I hope she does well. Drinking more than usual, loss of appetite, or vomiting are all classic signs of an infection if the uterus also known as a pyometra. These are more common in older dogs. These can become very serious and even life threatening if left untreated. I would strongly advise that you gave a veterinarian examine Misty right away.

Hi. Yes a heat should not last that long or cause her lethargy. I would be concerned she is having an abnormal hormone balance, or uterine infection, which can be life threatening. The best thing would be to have her seen now at ER and to get her spayed ASAP

I'm sorry Scruffy isn't doing well! I see that she isn't spayed, which makes me concerned that her symptoms could be caused by a pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. It would make her lethargic, not want to move much, reduce her appetite, and will be painful. It could also be that she injured herself causing these symptoms. Because I can't see her in person and rule out a pyometra, my recommendation would be to monitor her very closely. If you see any discharge coming from her vaginal area, her belly becomes larger, she starts vomiting, and/or won't move at all, these can be signs of a pyometra and she absolutely cannot wait until tomorrow to see a vet. In that case, rush her into an ER vet; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet will be found on a clinic's answering machine or website. I would hold off on food after midnight tonight and do not give her any breakfast in the morning in case the vet wants to take x-rays and needs to sedate her. She can have water, however. Rest her as much as possible. Get her into a vet as soon as possible if the symptoms you describe continue in the morning.
