My unspayed dog has bloody, sweet-smelling discharge. What is it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 10 years and 3 months old | 40 lbs

About 2 wks ago my female lab mix who's 8 yrs old seemed to have had a stroke or something. Her right eye was wandering and she seemed lethargic and confused. She never stopped drinking water which we took as a blessing but she did almost die. Since then she's been leaking and I'm not sure how much of it is actually urine as it's thick, bloody, milky, and has a very strong and sickeningly sweet odor. Other than that she's getting better. Eating and gaining weight back. Any idea what may be wrong

I see that Princess Marie isn't spayed. With the discharge you are mentioning, I'd be very concerned she has a pyometra. A pyometra is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. She needs to see a vet immediately. Please take her into one now.
