Is Taste of the Wild Salmon right for my overweight 1-year-old dog?

There are various opinions about Taste of the Wild and I personally prefer not to feed it. Since your dog is still a puppy I would strongly recommend feeding one of the reputable scientifically computed brands such as Hill's Science Diet , Royal Canine or Iams. Feed a puppy feed suitable for the size and age and your puppy will have the best start in life. What you feed into Bruno now, will pay off later in that you will have a dog who developed and grew up to his best genetic potential without health issues caused by insufficient nutrition.

His caloric intake for now will change as he will continue to grow and his needed caloric intake will continue to increase until he becomes an adult. For now it should be about 500 calories per day. However, this will continue to increase until he becomes an adult. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Skye. Personally, I agree with your veterinarian. Royal Canin is a superior product to Taste of the Wild. They have many veterinarians on staff to formulate their diets and out extensive research into their foods. Taste of the Wild seems to spend a ton of money on advertising. There is a lot of misinformation regarding pet foods. By-products are not lower quality ingredients. For example, if a wolf in the wild kills a moose to eat, it does not eat the skeletal muscle of the limbs first. It eats the internal organs as.these have a higher concentration of nutrients. I recently had a chance to speak with an ecologist at a university on this very topic. By-products are typically organ meat. Bottom line though, you need a food that works for your individual dog. No food is perfect for every pet but my patients on Taste of the Wild are doing well. If it is labeled for “growth and reproduction” or “all life stages” and if Sixx has normal stool, a shiny coat, and is gaining weight - it’s a good diet for him! Best of luck to you and Sixx!

It sounds like you are doing a lot of things right already! If you can find a version of the salmon food that is "light" or for "weight management" I would switch to that because it has less calories per cup. I usually recommend feeding roughly 1/2 cup of food per 20# of dog for the whole day. You can divide this in to 2 meals if that's what your dogs are used to. If your dogs still seem hungry you can mix in some canned green beans (no salt added) to the food. These have very little calories and lots of fiber so they make them feel more full. It's also important that you cut out any treats that are human food as well. Keep up the exercising too. Good luck.

At 13 months old, Magnus needs an adult food not a puppy food. The person who told you that puppy food has more protein is correct; it also has more calories and calcium which are needed to support a growing puppy. Once a dog reaches 12 months of age, then they do not need those extras and an adult food should be fed. I recommend the adult food for him. I hope this helps!

You are correct that it is difficult to find a good quality weight loss diet. Good quality meats and fats are high in calories. At the end of the day, weight loss is about calories. So, a weight loss food is beneficial because they can eat the same amount of food. But you can achieve the same decrease in calories by feeding less of the Acana that you are currently feeding. A 10-20% decrease in daily calories is exactly what I recommend for weight loss, so you could simply decrease from a level 2/3 cup to heaping 1/2 cup for a month. If Chloe is losing weight, then continue at that amount. If she is not losing weight, then decrease to a level 1/2 cup. Since she is a small dog, it should take her a number of months to lose the weight, so don't be discouraged if she only loses a few ounces in that first month. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
