Can I talk to a veterinarian for advice before getting a new dog?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

We’re going to get a dog next year and we have some questions that we would like answered from a professional. Can we go to the vet to have our questions answered, without even having our dog yet?

Absolutely. You can make an appointment with a veterinarian for a consultation . Make sure the vet knows that you are coming for advice ahead of having a puppy so that enough time is planned for the consultation. Be prepared to pay a fee for the professional advice, though.
