How to get my stubborn Shih Tzu to eat dog food, not human food?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 30 days old | 6.8 lbs

my shi tzuh is very stubborn and does not want to eat her kibble and i am part to blame because being a first time dog owner i did not know the proper feeding routine i gave her people food and i was able to sneak people food in her kibble and it worked for a while but now its strictly give me people food or my puperoni treats or i wont eat and when she doesn't eat she throws up this bile like foamy yellowish liquid what can i do to make her eat dog food please help!!

I would try to mix dry and canned food together and see if this helps. You can then slowly decrease the amount of canned food. She may always require some canned food or a few pieces of chicken or green beans over her food to make her want to eat. I would talk to your vet about an antacid that she can take to help reduce the vomiting. You may just have to be more stubborn than her and see if she will eat after skipping a couple of meals. If the vomiting or decrease appetite continues, I would have your vet take a look at her to make sure there isn't anything else going on. I hope this helps!

Hey there. Oh, Snowball. Really wish these guys wouldn't eat things they shouldn't. If she is acting okay I would try to feed her a bland diet. Boil some boneless chicken breasts and then shred those up and mix with some cooked rice. This will help bind around whatever she ate and maybe try to move it thru. Not knowing what it is she ate is a problem. If she were to start vomiting and not able to keep food and water down, I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. Whatever it was, could cause an obstruction. So, watch for vomiting and diarrhea and if she becomes lethargic. As long as she is acting normal and still seems playful you can try moving it thru with the chicken and rice. Good luck

Boilded chicken and rice or lunch meat turkey is very lean and easy on the stomach to digest. You can also try low fat yogurt or baby food if you need to place some in her mouth to get her interested. You may try pedialyte or gatorade or chicken broth to get her to drink to make sure she does not get dehydrated.

Most dogs will not starve themselves. It is best to remove any and all extras such as people food and treats that are more enticing, and only offer her the dog food for a few days. Some dogs may not be comfortable with certain types of bowls as they may clink against a collar or feel weird on their faces/feet. However, human food is not good for them! I recommend only offering Mini her dog food from now on. She may not want to eat it for a day or so, but she will feel hungry enough to start eating it again after this time. My dog won't eat dry food after stopping wet. Is she sick or stubborn?

It would be a good idea to have her checked by the vet, just in case. Most likely, though, she is being stubborn. Your dog has decided what her diet will be, but that's not her job . . . it's yours. Stop feeding her the wet food Put her dry food in a bowl on the floor without fuss and leave it for 15 minutes. After that time, pick it up whether she has eaten or not. Do not give her anything--no treats, snacks or human food--until her next scheduled mealtime. Then repeat the process. It may take several times for her to realize that there will be no more wet food, and that she must eat her dry food. Remember that you are not starving her–she is choosing not to eat. When she is hungry enough, she will. Do not give in or "feel sorry" for her. It will only make it harder to correct.

Why won't my new puppy eat her dog food? Is she just being picky?

This is a common problem in small breed dogs. They can be stubborn when it comes to dry food. I would stop offering her milk as this can upset her tummy. You could mix in some canned food or boiled chicken with her dry food to see if this helps to entice her to eat. If so, slowly start to decrease the canned food until she is just on dry food. And you may have to just be more stubborn than her. If she is continuously refusing the eat or not acting right then I would take her to your vet to ensure everything is okay. If she is skipping meals and she weighs less than 5 pounds then I would supplement her with nutrical (high calorie vitamin supplement) to help prevent her blood sugar from becoming too low. Hi, It generally is a good idea to only feed dog food. It is specially formulated for dogs and most are properly balanced and have everything they need. Human food, especially fatty foods can lead to pancreatitis and other health issues. The dog food does not necessarily have to be for Shih Tzus. Hope this helps!

My dog only eats chicken and rice. How to get her to eat dog food?

Your vet is correct that this is not a balanced diet for Chachi. Chicken and rice is fine as a short term diet when dogs have GI upset, but should not be given it as a daily diet. Your vet is also correct that you may have to starve her in order to get her to eat her dog food. I recommend offering her only a dog food. Put the food down in the morning and leave it from 15-20 minutes. It should be dog food only. Then after the 15-20 minutes, take the food away, and she gets no other food until dinner that night. This is extremely important! She needs to learn to eat what is offered to her, and giving her additional food during this time ruins that lesson. At dinner time, again put down dog food for 15-20 minutes, taking it away after that time even if she hasn't eaten it. Again, no food until breakfast the next morning. You have to be strict on this, and not give in. No more chicken and rice, dog food only. She will learn that the only food she gets is the dog food, and she will start eating it. My dog is a picky eater and only wants treats. What should I do?

It sounds like she's trained you to give her the good stuff :) I'd first start with a vet visit to rule out a medical cause (Anxiety, intestinal parasites, an issue with her liver processing nutrients called a liver shunt). If everything is normal, then slowly start weaning her off the treats and on to food. It's ok for her to go a day or two without eating a normal amount while you're transitioning her.
