How can I stop my puppy from playing too rough and injuring my cat?

It is very normal for young pets to want to play a bit rough. If it is getting to be too intense, taking some "time outs" and having everyone settle down can help to reduce the behavior and give everyone a chance to relax. This can be done by removing them to different rooms, distracting them with a shared toy, or giving each a treat and letting them chew on it in different parts of the same room. Once calm, play can then resume. Playing with toys, combined training sessions, fetch items, or puzzle toys can also help encourage the two to work together and enjoy company without getting too rough.

Your worry is very valid! It is best to make sure the two are only playing together when you can directly supervise them and that puppy and your older dog are separated when you are away so that an accident can't happen - even the most well intentioned of a dog can cause an injury! If the puppy starts playing too rough, a "time out" of a few minutes for everyone to calm down can also help and teaches your puppy that too rough of play is frowned upon. Diverting with treats and toys is also a great way, so keep that up.

In many cases puppies and cats will learn to tolerate peacefully each others behaviors but it is unlikely the cats will want to actually play with him. There are often teething troubles and it may result in the puppy getting scratched until he learns to keep his distance, which if in the eye can create painful ulcers but if you don't want to keep them permanently segregated I suggest you work on clicker training the puppy to help redirecting his behavior and use a child gate or other escape barrier to allow the cats to leave the room but keep the puppy in so they can avoid him if necessary

Thanks for providing photos; Shunu is adorable! I think your instincts are correct in that even though Queen wants to play, at one month of age Shunu is in danger of being injured. Queen may not understand how to play with a kitten so young and fragile, and it's very possible that as a stray, Shunu didn't get the benefit of learning how to set boundaries with playmates that she would have gotten had she been raised with her mother and littermates. At this point your best course of action is to keep them separated, at least until Shunu is a couple of weeks older. You don't have to put them in completely separate parts of the house, but just make sure that Queen can't play on the floor with Shunu or chase her. Soon enough Shunu will learn how to send signals to playmates, and Queen will start to understand the boundaries. When you do start letting them play, supervise closely.

The best thing to do is to allow the kittens to play together but when the play is begins to turn rough immediately separate them. This way your cat will begin to understand that this particular behavior (rough play) will result in a negative outcome (not getting to play). A good first step is to just stop playtime when Chandler starts to get too rough. If the fun stops the moment he gets too agitated and bites, he'll quickly learn that it's not fun to keep doing so. Once he has calmed down, you can then try another play session, again stopping if he gets too excited or agitated. Another solution is to play with a toy such as a feather on a string, where he can pounce and bite without coming close to your arms or hands. Offering a toy that he can chew on or bat with his paws and bite can also keep his mouth occupied instead of letting him munch on you. Laser pointers, toys that run around or move, etc, can also help get out that energy on things safer than your arms and hands.
