How do I stop my rescue dog from stealing food off the counter?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

Hi! My new rescue dog takes any opportunity to steal our food! Just took a burger off of the plate when I turned to pick something up. I keep foods pushed far back on counter. He eats twice daily & gets treats in between. Being a naughty bunny!!! Ugh. Thank you so much!

Hello, Dogs that know where food may be, will indeed take advantage of any opportunity they get to steal some food. It may be best to keep him in a separate room when you will be having food out, otherwise, you may be dealing with this behavior issue often. This will hopefully buy you some time to adjust him to only being exposed to his own food, and desensitize him from knowing that there is food on the table. As a golden rule, don't eat around your pet because they will likely want to eat your food as well.

Sorry about Murphy and hope this helps.
